Broncos Sweep Conference Weekly Awards
May 1, 2018

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boise State’s Rebekah Cervantes and Kelsey Broadus were named Mountain West Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played April 23-29, the conference office announced on Tuesday. This is the second-consecutive week the Broncos have swept Mountain West weekly awards, following Alison Seng and Micaela Leal receiving the honor last weekend.

The last time any Mountain West team swept conference awards in consecutive weeks, was April 19-May 3, 2011 when BYU had a share of Player and Pitcher of the Week for three-consecutive weeks.

“Last weekend was a momentous time for Bronco Softball with Kelsey and Becky leading our squad defensively,” head coach Cindy Ball said. “We have been known for our strong offensive numbers, but I really attribute last weekend’s success to our solid defense, led by both of these young ladies. Team X is full of many options 1-22, and it’s awesome to see new leaders every week.”

This is the first weekly honor for Broadus, who went 1-0 on the week against Fresno State. The sophomore struck out 12 batters to only five hits and one earned run through 9.2 innings of work in the circle.

Broadus pitched a six-inning shutout in the second game of the series, while not allowing a hit until the top of the third inning. She came on in the fourth inning with the bases loaded in the third game of the series, but escaped the jam and allowed only one hit over 3.2 innings, despite the Broncos ultimately losing the game.

Cervantes earned her second-career weekly honor after going .500 (5-for-10 on the week). She batted in three runs, scoring four times and adding two stolen bases in four games.

Boise State hits the road this weekend, taking on Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo., May 4-6.
