BOISE, Idaho- Christina Capobianco delivered three clutch RBI and the Boise State softball team outlasted San Jose State in a 10-7 marathon on Friday at Mountain Cove. After the Broncos (23-28, 10-6 WAC) jumped out to a 7-2 lead, the Spartans (30-20, 6-10 WAC) tied up the game at 7-7. However, the Broncos delivered late to regain the lead and eventually take the first game of the series.
The Broncos jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first by taking advantage of a pair of two-out walks. Holly Bourke lined a bases loaded single through the left side to plate Kellie Caplan from third. Allie Crump followed with another bases loaded hit that plated two more runs before she was thrown out trying to stretch her single into a double.
After the second inning, the score was 4-2 after the Spartans plated a pair of unearned runs in the top half of the inning and the Broncos crossed the plate once more in the bottom half. Kathy Cox delivered an RBI single to score Tazz Weatherly from second. Cox was one of three Broncos to have multi-hit games as she went 2-for-3 with the RBI and two runs scored.
Caplan and Christina Capobianco also delivered multi-hit games for the Broncos. Caplan proved to be the toughest out with a 3-for-4 performance and two runs scored, including a double to lead off the Broncos half of the first. Capobianco's hits could not have been timelier as both of her hits brought in runs.
The Broncos padded their lead with three more runs in the fourth. With one runner on and two outs, the Broncos stroked four consecutive singles to increase their lead to 7-2. Cox was the first to collect a single as she lined a hit into left field and advance Caplan to second. Vanessa Alvarez promptly laced another single to plate Caplan and was followed by Capobianco's first RBI single of the game. Bourke then collected her second RBI single of the game with a liner up the middle.
Just as the Broncos looked to be running away with the game, the Spartans exploded for five unanswered runs to tie up the game at 7-7. A couple of Bronco errors in the fifth led to a pair of Spartan runs with no outs. Julianne Aiello then smashed a homer to center field that just snuck over the fence to close the gap to 7-6. Kelli Fangonilo led off the sixth against Aubray Zell, who had just entered in relief of Crump, with a solo shot to left field to tie up the game.
The Broncos quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run single off the bat of Capobianco. Cox and Alvarez set up the clutch hit by reaching base to open the inning. Cox led off with a walk and advanced to second when she beat out a throw after Alvarez laid down a sacrifice bunt. Both runners moved up on a passed ball before Capobianco singled to right to plate both runners. Weatherly later plated Barcellos, who was pinch running for Capobianco to complete the scoring.
Four pitchers took the circle in the marathon game and both offenses combined for 17 runs on 21 hits. The Broncos and Spartans will battle again tomorrow on Senior Day at 1 p.m. Admission will be just one dollar in honor of Senior Day.
