RUSTON, La. - It took just three hits for the Boise State softball team to come away with its eighth WAC victory of the season as it took down the host, Louisiana Tech, 4-2 on Friday. Kathy Cox hit a three-run homer in the fifth that broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Broncos (21-27, 8-5 WAC) the victory.
The series-opening victory gave the Broncos their fourth consecutive WAC win and gave them some breathing room in third place. With the Broncos struggling at the plate and the score tied 1-1, Ashley Collier led off the top of the fifth with a walk and moved to second when Kellie Caplan laid down a bunt single in the next at-bat. Jessi Hanna laid down a sacrifice to advance both runners. Kath Cox then launched her 17th homer of the season to center field and gave the Broncos a commanding 4-1 lead.
Allie Crump earned her record-tying 13th win in the circle and kept the Broncos in the game while the offense struggled. Crump went the distance and scattered eight hits in the course of the game, but only allowed two runs to cross the plate. Most of the Lady Techsters (21-16, 6-7 WAC) damage against Crump came in the first four frames as they reached base in each of the first four innings. However, Crump responded to Cox's go-ahead homer by sitting down the next seven Techsters in order. She fanned four Techsters in the game, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the sixth inning.
The Broncos only other hit in the game came in the first inning when Vanessa Alvarez doubled to right field and plated Caplan. Caplan led off the game with a walk and later swiped second. It was her 14th stolen base of the year, which ties the team total from 2009.
The Techsters put their first run across in the second, but could not scratch out another run until the last play of the game. With one runner on first in the seventh, Amberly Waits smashed a double, her third hit of the game, to score the runner. However, the Broncos executed a nice relay to third to catch Waits trying to stretch the hit into a triple. The play ended the game and sealed the Broncos victory.
The Broncos and Lady Techsters will face off again tomorrow in a doubleheader that is slated to begin at 2 p.m. (MT). The time was pushed back due to expected inclement weather tonight and tomorrow morning in Ruston, La.
