BOISE, Idaho - A big third inning propelled the Boise State softball team to a 5-2 win over Utah State at Mountain Cove on Friday. With the win, the Broncos (18-25, 5-5 WAC) surpassed last year's total of WAC victories and moved up to fourth in the WAC standings.
Kathy Cox and Christina Capobianco hit a pair of home runs in the bottom of the third to highlight the Broncos' victory. Cox smashed a solo shot to left center that gave the Broncos a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Capobianco drilled a two-run round-tripper over the Bronco bullpen in left field to pad the Broncos lead to 5-1.
Holly Bourke also contributed in the third with a run-scoring double to left center. Bourke was dialed in all day as she went 2-for-3 with two doubles in the game with the RBI and a run scored. Bourke's first double came when she hit a laser off the center field fence to lead off the bottom of the second although she would end the inning stranded on third.
Allie Crump earned her team-leading 11th victory in the circle with another solid performance. Crump scattered seven hits and allowed two runs in the complete game win. She also struck out two Aggies in the game to push her career total to 199 strikeouts. However, the victory didn't come easy as an Aggie reached base in all seven innings. Crump was equal to the task as continuously shut the door on the Aggies' rallies.
The Broncos never trailed in the game as they wasted no time in getting on the board. In the bottom of the first, Tazz Weatherly plated Jessi Hanna from second base with a double to left center. The Aggies responded with a run in the top of the second but the Broncos four-run rally in the third put them ahead for good.
The Broncos and Aggies will meet again tomorrow in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Mountain Cove. Both teams will be fighting to keep their positions in the WAC standings as the conference season approaches the halfway point.
