LOGAN, Utah-Boise State softball dropped its series opener against Utah State 4-3, Friday, in Logan, Utah. The Broncos left the bases loaded three times in the final four innings.

Utah State (8-34, 3-7) scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. Allie Crump took the loss for Boise State, allowing four runs on eight hits in her four innings.

The Aggies struck first with three runs in the bottom of the third inning, scoring on three-straight singles with two away.

Boise State (25-14, 8-2) answered immediately with two runs in the top of the fourth. Crump doubled to the centerfield wall to score Holly Bourke. Devon Bridges followed by reaching on an error and drive in Mackenzie Whyte from third. Two outs later a walk loaded the bases, but the Broncos left them that way. It would become a pattern.

Whyte tied the game with a double down the left field line to push Kellie Caplan across. Crump and Bridges each drew walks to load the bases with one away. The score remained deadlocked after a fielder's choice cut down Whyte home and a strikeout ended the inning.

A lead-off walk followed by a bunt single by Utah State to start the bottom of the fifth chased Crump. Lela Work came on in relief, retiring each batter she faced. It was Work's wild pitch, however, allowing the go-ahead run to score after a sacrifice bunt.

Work recorded a flawless sixth inning to keep the Broncos within a run headed to the final frame. Bourke and Whyte gave Boise State hope with back-to-back singles. A groundout moved them both up and the Broncos had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. Bridges drew her second walk of the game to load the bases with one out. A pop out and a comebacker ended the threat and the game.

All seven Bronco hits came from the top four spots in the order, including a career-high-tying three hits from Whyte.

Mandy Harmon earned the win for Utah State, pitching two and two-thirds innings in relief.

Of the 11 Aggie runners to reach via hit or walk, seven of them did so with two outs.

The Broncos will look to rebound and take the series when play resumes Saturday, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
