FRESNO, Calif. - The Boise State softball team split a pair of one-run games on Saturday that started with a 1-0 win over Fresno State but ended with 3-2 loss. The Broncos (14-21, 4-2) tied their WAC wins mark from their inaugural campaign in 2009 only two weeks into the conference season. Aubray Zell was dominant all day as she earned the complete game, shutout victory in game one and shut down the Bulldogs (25-13, 4-2) for the final frames of the nightcap.
Zell and Mackenzie Oakes engaged in a classic pitcher's duel in the early game with the Broncos sneaking away with a 1-0 victory after scoring an unearned run in the top of the sixth. Vanessa Alvarez started the rally as she reached on an error to lead off the inning. Ashley Collier was called on to pinch run and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Holly Bourke. Tazz Weatherly followed with a sharp single to right center field that plated Collier for the game's only run.
Zell tossed the second shutout of the season to lead the Broncos to victory, scattering just three hits in the complete game win. She slammed the door on Bulldog rallies in the second and fifth innings to keep the shutout intact. In the second, Caitlin Stiglich led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. She was sacrificed over to third but was stranded after Zell forced two groundouts to end the inning.
Lisamarie Coronado led off the fifth with a double to give the Bulldogs another threat. She advanced to third on a groundout but was cut down at home as Kathy Cox snagged a bouncer to third and whipped a throw home to keep the game scoreless.
After Weatherly gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead in the sixth, Zell retired the next six Bulldogs in order to secure the victory for the Broncos.
The second game featured another pitcher's duel with both teams doing all the damage early. Cox immediately put the Broncos on the board with a two-run homer in the top of the first. However, the Broncos wouldn't collect another hit until the seventh inning.
Fresno State responded with the bats as they scratched out an unearned run in the first to cut the lead in half. In the third, Michelle Moses hit a two-run homer to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the day. The home run brought in Aubray Zell in relief as she traded blows with Bulldog starter Morgan Melloh over the final five frames. Neither team was able to advance a runner past second base in the final five innings.
The Broncos return home for a doubleheader on Tuesday when they host Utah in a non-conference matchup. The Broncos will also host Hawaii in a three-game series next Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mountain Cove.
