STOCKTON, Calif. - The Boise State softball team continued its spring break trip with another split on Wednesday at the University of Pacific. The Broncos (13-19, 3-0) bounced back from a 9-1, run-rule loss in the first game with a come-from-behind victory in the nightcap. The Broncos took the second game 4-2 to improve to 2-2 on the road trip.
The Broncos ran into trouble early in game one as the Tigers (12-18) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and had an 8-1 lead by the end of the second. Vanessa Alvarez provided the Broncos only run with a solo blast to leftcenter in the top of the second.
Lela Work provided quality innings out of the bullpen, allowing only three hits and one run in three innings pitched. Unfortunately, the one run came in the bottom of the fifth to grant the Tigers the run-rule victory. Work also struck out three batters in relief.
Allie Crump (8-12) took the loss after winning five consecutive decisions to set a new career-high for wins in a season.
Aubray Zell helped the Broncos get back on the winning track with a gem in the later game to earn her fourth victory of the season. Zell allowed only five hits and two runs (one earned) in the complete game win. She also struck out two and walked three in the win.
Alexa Rivera scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second to give the Tigers a 1-0. The Tigers crossed the plate again in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.
The Broncos bats came to life in the top of the sixth as the Broncos mounted a late-inning comeback for the nightcap victory. Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo started the rally in the sixth by reaching on a catcher's interference. Alvarez followed with a single and Holly Bourke doubled to leftcenter to plate Viers-Gordillo and get the Broncos on the board. Christina Capobianco tied up the game with the Broncos fourth consecutive hit, a single down the left field line, plating Alvarez.
Zell shut down the Tigers in the sixth to set the table for the Broncos to take their first lead of the day. Kathy Cox gave the Broncos the lead with a solo homer down the left field line, her 13th homer of the year. Maghan Yurek padded the Broncos lead later in the inning with a bloop single into right field that plated pinch runner Brittany Barcellos. Alvarez and Bourke each collected singles earlier in the inning to set up Yurek's RBI single. Zell shut down the Tigers again in the seventh to secure the win.
The Broncos return to WAC play with a three-game series at Fresno State on Fri.-Sat. The first game is set to take place on Friday at 7 p.m. (MT) with a doubleheader following on Saturday at 1 p.m.
