Late Heroics Lift Broncos Past Weber State

BOISE, Idaho-Devon Bridges and Allie Crump hit back-to-back home runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Boise State a 2-0 lead and an eventual 2-1 win against Weber State Saturday, during the SpringHill Suites Invitational #2 at Mountain Cove Softball Field.

Bridges took the first pitch she saw just left of straight-away center and barely out of reach for the outstretched Wildcat centerfielder to get the Broncos (22-10) on the board first. Crump worked a 2-1 count before unloading a pitch just right of dead center. It is the third time this season- and second time this week- Boise State has enjoyed back-to-back home runs.

Aubray Zell held the Wildcat offense at bay while the Bronco bats warmed up. Zell faced just four batters over the minimum for the game. She allowed five hits and walked one while striking out six. A double play and a thrown-out, would-be base stealer cut down two of the Wildcats' base runners.

Weber State catcher Janel Cunningham led off the top of the seventh with a home run of her own to cut the Bronco lead in half. Zell returned to form as she induced ground outs from the next three batters to seal the victory and earn her 14th win in her 11th complete game of the year.

The senior hurler struck out six for the game. Her second strikeout, against the first batter of the second inning, gave her a personal single-season best. She now has 120 strikeouts on the year, trailing only Crump's 130 from 2010 on the school record list.

Tara Glover led off the bottom of the first with a double and was on third base with one out when Devon Bridges flew out to center. Glover tried to tag and score, but a perfect throw gunned her down at the plate.

The Broncos' next major threat came in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with two down. Kelly Sweeney poked a grounder to the hole at short, but another sharp defensive play got the force out at third to retire the side.

The middle of the Bronco order provided all of the offense Zell needed and stretched Boise State's home winning streak to 22 games.

The SpringHill Suites Invitational comes to a close Sunday, with three games. Action starts at 10 a.m. (MT), when New Mexico takes on UTSA. That game will be followed by New Mexico and Weber State. The Broncos and Wildcats will finish the day with a rematch. First pitch for Boise State versus Weber State is scheduled for 2 p.m. (MT).

This will be the final chance to catch the Broncos at home before Mountain West play begins April 13-15, when UNLV comes to Mountain Cove Softball Field.
