LOGAN, Utah The Boise State softball team opened WAC play with a clean sweep over Utah State in a three-game series this weekend. After taking the opener on Friday, the Broncos (16-9, 3-0) completed the sweep with a pair of victories in a doubleheader on Saturday in Logan, Utah.

Game 1
The Broncos took advantage of seven Utah State errors in the first game en route to a 12-6 victory. Junior Kathy Cox’s four RBI and junior Laeha Hill’s four hits led the Broncos in their third consecutive win and second straight over the Aggies (6-19, 0-3).

Boise State started off the game hot and never looked back. Christina Capobianco started things off with an RBI single into center field that gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead in the first. They would add to the lead in the second with three more runs. Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo drove in the first run of the inning and was followed by a two-RBI single from Kathy Cox that extended the lead to 4-0.

The third inning brought in five more runs for the Broncos thanks, in part, to three Aggie errors in the inning. Hill picked up one of her two RBI to start the scoring. Two more runs came in on the third error of the inning and Cox launched a two run shot over the left field fence for the final two runs of the inning, pushing the score to a comfortable 9-0 lead.

The Aggies avoided the abbreviated loss with four runs over the next two frames and two more runes in the sixth, but the Broncos put up a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to hold off the Aggie rally.

Allie Crump picked up her fifth win of the season and Mandy Klein pitched three innings of relief to pick up her first save of the year. Klein struck out one and did not allow an earned run to score en route to the save.

Game 2
The Broncos scored all seven of their runs in the last two frames to sweep the season series from Utah State with a 7-3 win. Hill added two more hits in the second game and a career-high three RBI to lead the Broncos to victory.

The Aggies came out of the gates in the second game with a determination to avoid the sweep. Utah State was able to manufacture one run in the first and one more in the third to  take the 2-0 lead. Lindsey Benson breezed through the Bronco lineup in the first five innings, allowing only four hits and no runs to score.

The Bronco bats sprung into action in the last two frames, picking up all seven runs and seven hits after five innings of silence. The Broncos loaded the bases in the sixth with two outs and the top of the order coming to the plate. Hill promptly picked up her first two RBI of the game with a single into left center that tied up the game at 2-2. She was followed by Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo with another RBI single into right field that gave the Broncos a 3-2 lead. However, the Aggies fought began in the bottom half of the inning to tie up the game at 3-3.

The Bronco offense stepped up again in the seventh for four more runs. After taking the lead on an error, Tazz Weatherly knocked in two more insurance runs with a double to center, and was followed by another RBI-single from Hill that gave the Broncos a 7-3 lead entering the bottom of the seventh. The Aggies weren’t able to do any damage and the Broncos earned the come-from-behind victory.

Crump pitched four innings in relief to pick up her sixth win in three weeks. She struck out five and allowed only one run through her four innings in the circle.

The Broncos take a travel day tomorrow and will face Utah Valley in a doubleheader rematch on Monday in Orem, Utah at 2:30 p.m.
