COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-Boise State seniors Allie Crump and Aubray Zell were named Mountain West Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Tuesday. It is Zell's third MW Pitcher of the Week honor this season and sixth conference pitcher of the week award of her career. For Crump, it is her first MW Player of the Week award of the year and career.
The duo led Boise State to three wins during its home-opening weekend, Thursday and Friday, in the SpringHill Suites Invitational. Crump and Zell helped the Broncos extend their home winning streak to 18 games, the third-longest active streak in the country, and win the 100th game in program history Thursday, against Minnesota.
Crump paced Boise State at the plate, batting 6-for-11 (.545) with two home runs and four runs driven in over the three games, including a two-out, walk-off home run Friday, to beat Portland State. The senior recorded a hit in every game to run her hitting streak to six games, culminating with her first three-hit performance in more than a year against Utah State. Against the Vikings, Crump came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh after Portland State tied the game in the top half of the inning. The first two Broncos struck out but Crump crushed a 1-1 pitch to right center that sailed over the fence for the third game-winning, walk-off home run in school history.
Those were not the first heroics of the weekend for Crump, however. The Elk Grove, Calif., native singled in the eighth inning against Minnesota to put runners on the corners. Two batters later the run scored from third as Boise State took a 2-1 extra-inning win from the Golden Gophers. Crump finished her weekend strong with a 3-for-4 game against the Aggies, including a sixth-inning, two-run home run that sealed the 7-1 win and stretched the Broncos' home winning streak to 18 games. She also singled in a run in the fifth.
Zell earned two complete-game victories for Boise State in the SpringHill Suites Invitational. Zell allowed just nine hits in her 15 innings, striking out 18 to beat Minnesota on Thursday, and Utah State on Friday, as she posted a 0.93 earned run average in two starts. The senior allowed one run in each game as she gave up a solo home run to each team. In an eight-inning win against Minnesota, Zell fanned 11 and walked only one. A third-inning home run was one of just four hits allowed as Zell closed the door the rest of the way. She struck out the side in the seventh, including the final two batters with runners at first and second to keep the Broncos within a run. Against Utah State, Zell scattered five hits and walked two while striking out seven. Zell shook off a second-inning home run to hold the Aggies scoreless the rest of the way and pick up her 11th win of the season.
Boise State looks to continue its winning ways at home with five more games at Mountain Cove Softball Field Thursday through Sunday, during the SpringHill Suites Invitational #2. Seattle, UT San Antonio, Weber State and New Mexico will be in town with 13 games on the schedule for the four-day tournament.
