Zell Earns Second-Straight Pitcher of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- Boise State senior Aubray Zell was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Feb. 19, the conference announced Tuesday. Zell has won both weekly pitching awards handed out by the MW this season.

Zell went 2-1 in three complete-game appearances over the weekend at the Campbell/Cartier Classic in San Diego. She registered a 1.05 ERA and a 14:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in her 20 innings of work, holding opponents to a .211 batting average.

The Lakewood, Calif., native recorded her third shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory against San Diego on Saturday, allowing just two hits while striking out seven. She did not walk a batter and retired the side in order in five of her seven innings.

In Sunday's win over Notre Dame, Zell held the Fighting Irish to one run. She was perfect through three innings before scattering five hits over the final four frames. For the fourth time in six starts, she did not walk a batter and struck out five Notre Dame hitters to lift the Broncos to a 3-1 victory.

Zell limited No. 12/8 UCLA to four runs (two earned) Friday, in her first game of the weekend as the Broncos fell, 4-1, for her first loss of the season. The Bruins scored two runs in the first frame, snapping Zell's streak of 19 consecutive shutout innings to start the year.

Zell has now issued only two walks to the last 232 batters she has faced, dating back to last season. Her three shutouts are one shy of the single-season school record of four she set last year.

The Broncos continue their tough shcedule at the Cathedral City Classic. Boise State will play five games, beginning Thursday against Cal State Northridge. The team's stay at the tournament will conclude Saturday, with the program's first meeting against the No. 1 team in the country, Florida. The tournament slate also includes a matchup with No. 6/6 Oklahoma.
