Broncos Close Weekend with Win Over Notre Dame

SAN DIEGO-Christina Capobianco was 3-for-3 at the plate and Aubray Zell went the distance in the circle as Boise State defeated Notre Dame, 3-1 Sunday, at SDSU Softball Stadium in the Broncos' final game of the Campbell/Cartier Classic.

Zell (5-1) scattered five hits and did not walk a batter while striking out five. It is the fourth time in six starts she has not issued a walk. Behind Zell's quick start to the season Boise State is now 7-3, the best start in school history.

Despite the Broncos putting two runners on in the bottom of the first, the game belonged to the pitchers in the early going. Zell was perfect through three and the Broncos had no runs to show for two hits in the first two innings.

Notre Dame starter Laura Winter had retired seven in a row when Kellie Caplan and Capobianco each singled with two outs to give the Broncos life. Allie Crump broke the deadlock with a two-out double to left center that scored both runners. The clutch hit snapped a 0-for-12 skid for Crump at the plate.

The Fighting Irish answered back immediately in the top of the fourth. Alexa Maldonado led off with a home run to left field for Notre Dame's first hit of the game. It was the first home run allowed by Zell this season and cut the Bronco lead in half at 2-1.

Tara Glover led off the fifth inning with her second single of the game, giving her seven multi-hit performances in her first 10 games as a Bronco. After a wild pitch and a groundout moved her to third, Capobianco stroked her third hit of the game up the middle and added to Boise State's lead. Glover's hitting streak is now at 20, including the final 10 games of 2011 while she was at Utah.

Boise State will continue its season at the Cathedral City Classic, Feb. 23-25 in Cathedral City, Calif. The tournament starts Thursday, against Cal State Northridge (3 p.m. PT) and Cal State Fullerton (8:30 p.m. PT).

Notes
The Broncos are off to the best start in school history...previously, the fewest number of games to reach seven wins was 14 (2009)...the team was 2-8 through its first 10 games each of the last two seasons...Aubray Zell has walked just two of the past 232 batters she has faced, dating back to last season...Kellie Caplan's run on Allie Crump's double was the 900th run scored in school history.
