COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-Boise State senior Aubray Zell was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week for games Feb. 9-12, the conference announced Tuesday. The honor is Zell's fourth of her carer, the first from the Mountain West.
Zell went 3-0 in three appearances Feb. 10-12, at the Aggie Stampede in Davis, Calif. In three starts, Zell pitched 19 innings without allowing a run and surrendered just seven hits while only walking one and striking out 12. The Lakewood, Calif., native notched the eighth and ninth shutouts of her career and threw five innings of one-hit ball in her other start.
In Boise State's season opener Friday, Zell went the distance against Loyola Marymount, giving up three hits and a walk while striking out five in a 3-0 win. Against Nevada, Saturday, she faced one batter over the minimum in five innings, striking out four before leaving with a 7-0 lead. The Broncos went on to beat the Wolf Pack 7-3 and improve to 3-0. In the weekend finale, Sunday against tournament-host UC Davis, Zell recorded another complete game, shutting out the Aggies on three hits and three strikeouts.
Zell retired the side in order in 11 of her 19 innings in the circle and, since allowing a first-inning walk in the season opener, she has faced 64-straight batters without issuing a base on balls.
Zell and the Broncos return to action Friday, against UC Santa Barbara at 10 a.m. (PT) in San Diego. Boise State will play five games in three days at the Campbell Cartier Classic, including No. 12/8 UCLA and No. 7/9 Washington (Saturday).
