DENVER, Colo. - In only its second year, the Boise State softball team has placed 3B Kathy Cox on the 2010 preseason All-WAC team as voted by the conference's coaches. The Broncos were picked to finish seventh in the eight-team conference in the preseason coaches poll.

Cox, a senior from Gresham, Ore., earned postseason honors after the inaugural 2009 season when the National Fastpitch Coaches Association named her to the All-Pacific Region team. The standout senior was also a two-time All-American at the junior college level prior to her arrival at Boise State.

Cox was the driving force behind the Broncos' offense in 2009 as she led the team in multiple categories. As a junior, she led the team with 40 RBI on the season with 18 RBI coming in WAC games, which was tied for second among all WAC hitters. She also sported a team-leading .341 batting average with 59 hits and 40 runs scored on the year. In addition, she led the Broncos with six home runs in WAC games, which also tied for second among all WAC hitters.

As a team, the Broncos were picked to finish seventh in the WAC, receiving 18 points in the coaches' poll. San Jose State was picked in sixth but received only one more point than the Broncos with 19 points. The slim margin between the teams shows the expectations for a close fight for the last spot in the WAC Tournament in Las Cruces, N.M. Only six teams will make the tournament this year instead of the seven-team format that was used in 2009.

No. 24/25 Fresno State was the overwhelming favorite to repeat as the regular season WAC champions, receiving 48 points and 6 first-place votes. Nevada was picked second and received one first-place vote. The Wolf Pack was followed by Hawaii, New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech to round out the top-5. Utah State was picked eighth behind the Spartans and Broncos.

The 2010 season kicks off on Feb. 13 when the Broncos travel to San Diego, Calif. to face San Diego and UC Riverside. The WAC season will begin on Mar. 27 with New Mexico State visiting Mountain Cove for a three-game series.
