BEAVERTON, Ore.-Boise State softball freshman Morgan Barnes is a finalist for the 2010 Johnny Carpenter Prep Athlete of the Year Award. The winner will be announced Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at the Oregon Sports Awards show at the Tiger Woods Center on the Nike World Campus in Beaverton, Ore.
Barnes, a native of Grants Pass, Ore., led Grants Pass High School to the OSAA 6A State Championship in 2010, while earning OSAA 6A Pitcher of the Year honors. It was her third selection to the all-state team. Barnes set state records for strikeouts (273) and shutouts (16) as a senior, tossing seven no-hitters and two perfect games in her final season at Grants Pass. She recorded a 0.29 ERA on the year.
Her pitching record was 19-3 as a senior to cap a four-year run of 78-11. Barnes was named player of the game for the state championship game in 2010, as well as 2008 when she led the Lady Cavers to a state title as a sophomore.
Barnes also performed at the plate, batting .444 as a senior, belting four home runs and driving in 38 runs.
The Oregon Sports Awards honors the state's top athletes, coaches and teams. Awards are voted on by a statewide media panel.
Emmy award-winning sportscaster Ahmad Rashad will be the master of ceremonies, and numerous sports celebrities will present the awards. The show is to be televised by Comcast SportsNet. It will be aired Monday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m. (PT) across Oregon.
Boise State softball begins its season Feb. 12, against Loyola Marymount at the Long Beach State Kickoff Tournament in Long Beach, Calif.
