SAN DIEGO - Boise State fought back from an early four-run deficit to tie things up at 6-6 Friday at San Diego State, but the Aztecs scored the deciding run in the bottom of the eighth to even the series with the 7-6 victory.

San Diego State pinch-hitter Ashley Ercolano's one-out single up the middle off of Shawna Burke scored pinch-runner Aris Metcalfe from third with the game-winner.

The teams return to action in Saturday's rubber game at noon MT. It will also be the 2016 finale for both teams.

It was a disappointing loss for Burke, who came on in relief for starter Jenna Bassler with one out in the first, and gave up just three runs and struck out four over the final seven-plus innings. Bassler was charged with four runs on three hits.

It also spoiled fine offensive performances by a number of Broncos. Izzy Serrano hit a three-run homer in the fourth, the first long ball of her career, to pull the Broncos (14-37, 6-17 MW) to within a run at 6-5, while Teauna Hughes, Kaitlyn Shreves and Tatiana Sorokina had three hits apiece, with Hughes driving in two runs.

After Serrano's homer made it 6-5, the Broncos tied it up in the sixth with help from an Aztec error. Shreves doubled with one out, and on Sorokina's infield hit to second, scored as Aztec first baseman Sam Vlot missed the throw, which went into the Bronco dugout.

Burke shut down the Aztecs in the sixth and seventh to force extras, but San Diego State (29-22, 11-12 MW) needed just four batters to score the winner in the eighth.

The Aztecs threatened to pull away early on in the contest. After Hughes gave the Broncos a 2-0 lead with a two-run single in the first, San Diego State used two singles and a walk to load the bases against Bassler with one out in the bottom of the first. Jaylene Ignacio singled to center, scoring Leia Ruiz, and after Burke came in, Orlando cleared the bases with a double to left-center to make it 4-2.

San Diego State added two more in the second on an RBI double from Sydnee Cable and an RBI single from Ignacio, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI on the night.

Erica Romero got the win in relief for the Aztecs, allowing no hits or baserunners over the final two innings. Starter Alex Formby gave up six runs (four earned) on 11 hits with six strikeouts over six innings.
