BOISE, Idaho - Morgan Lamb and Teauna Hughes each hit a home run, the latter’s a leadoff shot in the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie as Boise State avoided a sweep by beating New Mexico, 7-5, Sunday at Dona Larsen Park.

The win snapped a five-game slide for the Broncos, who host their final home series of 2016 next weekend as San Jose State comes to town. The opener against the Spartans is set for Friday at 4 p.m.

Boise State (13-33, 5-13 MW) overcame an error that led to three New Mexico runs in the first as well as 10 walks issued by its pitchers to claim the win. Lamb’s two-run homer to left in the third capped the Broncos’ climb out of that early 3-0 hole, putting Boise State up 5-4.

The Lobos (22-21, 7-10 MW) pulled even at 5-5 in the fifth, as Chelsea Johnson and Jade Gray walked to open the frame and advanced a bag on a passed ball. Karissa Haleman then hit a sacrifice fly to center that plated pinch-runner Kasey Halleen.

It didn’t take long for the Broncos to re-take the lead off of Lobo picher Lisa Rodrigues, however, as Hughes led off the sixth with an opposite-field blast to left, her ninth home run of the season. The Broncos tacked on another run later in the frame, as Lamb and pinch-hitter Kaelie Doyle drew two-out walks followed by pinch-hitter Izzy Serrano singling up the middle to score pinch-runner Shaelee Pearson and make it 7-5.

Paige Reimann sealed her first win as a Bronco by holding the Lobos scoreless over the final two innings. Reimann came on in relief of Shawna Burke in the top of the fifth with runners on first and second and one out and the game tied 5-5, but needed just one pitch to get out of the jam. Shelbie Franc lined out to Rebekah Cervantes at short, who flipped to second to double off Gray and end the threat.

Reimann gave up just a hit and a walk over the final two and two-thirds innings to get the win. Burke allowed an unearned run over an inning and a third after Bronco starter Nicole Wilson went the first three innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks. The Bronco pitchers, despite walking 10, held New Mexico to just four hits in the contest.

Hughes had two hits and two RBI to supplement her home run, while Lamb’s homer was her fourth of the season. Cervantes went 3-for-4 for the Broncos.

New Mexico took its 3-0 lead in the top of the first thanks in part to a muffed throw at first by Bronco first baseman Makenzie Sullivan. Jasmine Casados followed with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Cheyenne Smith, then Chelsea Johnson hit a two-run homer to right-center, her fourth of the weekend.

Boise State loaded the bases with none out in its half of the first, but could only manage Kayla Clausen’s RBI groundout. A Lobo fielding error with two away in the second gifted the Broncos their second run, and after New Mexico got the run back to go up 4-2 in the third, Hughes banged an RBI single through the right side to score Cervantes then scored three batters later on Lamb’s homer.

That spelled the end for Lobo starter Colette Robert, who gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits. Rodrigues, however, took the loss after giving up two runs in the sixth, falling to 2-2.
