BOISE, Idaho - San Diego State scored early and often Saturday at Dona Larsen Park, and Boise State could not recover as the Aztecs evened the weekend series with a 14-0, five-inning win.

The teams return to Dona Larsen Park for the rubber game Sunday, with first pitch set for noon.

"We just have to play together. Our pitchers have to be better; it's about pitching and defense, and we weren't sharp today," said Boise State head coach Cindy Ball. "[San Diego State] competed and made adjustments, and we sat back."

The Aztecs (24-15, 8-6 MW) went up 4-0 after the second inning, and their eight-run third created a hole from which the Broncos (25-16, 7-10 MW) could not recover. San Diego State's scoring started with a Molly Sturdivant sacrifice fly that scored Katie Byrd in the first inning, and continued with three more runs in the second as the Aztecs loaded the bases with none out and got consecutive RBI singles from Kiera Wright and Zaria Meshack before Jaylene Ignacio scored on a fielding error at short by Rebekah Cervantes.

Bronco starter Kelsey Broadus lasted just an inning-plus, suffering her first loss of the campaign and falling to 5-1 after giving up four runs on four hits with two walks. Veronica Lynch came on after Meshack's RBI single, got through the second frame but exited after four batters in the third.

San Diego State's Sydnee Cable led off that third inning with a solo shot to make it 5-0, with follow-up singles from Taylor Stewart and Shelby Thompson preceding a wild pitch that advanced the runners and a two-RBI single from Ignacio which chased Lynch. Rainey Dyreson came on in relief, getting an out on Wright's fly ball to right. But a single from Meshack put runners on the corners and an off-target throw into center field on a stealing attempt allowed Ignacio to score the fourth run of the frame.

Byrd doubled to score Meshack, and after Jenavee Peres reached base on a wild pitch after swinging through a third strike, Sturdivant hit a three-run home run to center to put San Diego State in front, 12-0. Sturdivant was one of four Aztecs with a pair of hits in the game, leading the team with four RBIs. Ignacio, Meshack and Thompson also had two hits apiece, with Ignacio driving in three runs.

Aztec starter Marissa Moreno went three innings, improving to 9-5 as she retired all nine Broncos she faced before Julie McDonald came on for the fourth. Izzy Serrano broke up the perfect game with a one-out walk in the fourth before Cervantes followed with the first Bronco hit of the contest, but the Broncos could not take advantage as McDonald got Makenzie Sullivan to ground into a fielder's choice followed by Cassidy Edwards fouling out to left.

After San Diego State added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, Morgan Lamb and Kora Wade each singled to start the home half. But McDonald again used her defense to thwart the rally, getting consecutive fielder's choices from pinch-hitters Jessica McKay and Micaela Leal before striking out Corey Hendrickson to end the contest.
