Final Stats

FRESNO, Calif. - Boise State left the bases loaded in the seventh inning in a 3-1 loss Sunday, against Fresno State. The Broncos outhit the Bulldogs 8-5 in the series finale but could not avoid being swept.

Fresno State (25-18, 4-3 MW) scored all three of its runs with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, all of which were unearned. The Bulldogs capitalized on a Bronco error and hit back-to-back doubles with two outs to drive in three runs. Boise State (17-22-1, 1-5 MW) added an unearned run of its own in the top of the third, but left six runners in scoring position throughout the game and came up short.

Rebecca Patton took the complete-game loss without allowing an earned run. Patton (9-9) scattered five hits, a walk and a hit batter over six innings. She struck out two and kept the Bulldogs off balance after the shaky first inning. Patton needed to face just 19 batters to secure the final 16 outs of the game and allowed a runner to reach second just once after the first inning. The redshirt junior retired the leadoff batter in all six innings.

The Bulldogs' decisive first inning was put together by a hit-by-pitch with one out followed by an error. Devon Bridges fielded a ground ball and tried to get the lead runner at second, but an errant throw forced Mackenzie Whyte off the bag and both runners were safe. After the cleanup hitter popped out and a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position Vonnie Martin drove a double down the line in left to score two runs and give Martin five RBI in the series. She was driven home on a double by Paige Gumz before the inning came to an end.

Boise State threatened in the seventh when the Bronco batters attacked early in their at bats. Five pitches into the inning the bases were loaded with one out. Tara Glover singled up the middle on the first pitch of the inning. Bourke immediately lined out to left. Bridges singled on the first pitch she saw, the third time in the game she put the first pitch in play and twice for a hit. Whyte was a little more patient when she swung at a 1-0 pitch and singled through the left side.

Glover was held up at third and the bases were loaded with the go-ahead run aboard and one out. A strikeout and a ground out ended Boise State's last-chance effort, sealing the 3-1 decision and series sweep for Fresno State.

Bourke and Bridges each delivered two-hit games for the second-straight day. Bourke singled in the first and third. She came around to score Boise State's only run, scoring from second on a booted ground ball.

Bridges doubled with two outs in the fifth and singled in the seventh to put the tying run on base with one out.

Gumz led Fresno State with a 3-for-3 day at the plate for the second-straight game. Jill Compton pitched the first four innings to earn her 11th win of the year and second against the Broncos. Hannah Harris, who was the winning pitcher Saturday, picked up the save in three innings of relief.

Patton allowed just one earned run in eight innings of work during the series, but was tagged with two losses and Fresno State scored eight total runs against her.

Boise State returns home April 19, for the start of a six-game home stand. Mountain West leader San Diego State (5-1) visits Boise for a three-game series April 19-21, followed by a three-game set against Colorado State April 26-28, all at Dona Larsen Park.
