SANTA CLARA, Calif. - San Jose State scored five times in the second inning, and Boise State could not climb out of the early hole as the Broncos dropped Thursday's series opener, 6-2, at Mission College in Santa Clara.

The Spartans got to Bronco starter Christina Washington in the second inning, beginning with Alexandra Luna's RBI single with one out. After a single from Brittany Abacherli loaded the bases, the Spartans got the inning's big hit from Casey Watt, who lined a two-run double to left-center to make it 3-0. Cassidy Clark followed with a two-run single just inside the left-field line, scoring Abacherli and Watt, to complete the Spartans' scoring in the frame.

Paige Reimann came into the circle at that point for Boise State and ended the frame.Washington fell to 13-6 with the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits and a walk over an inning and a third. Reimann would go two innings, giving up a run on two hits with two strikeouts before giving way to Veronica Lynch, who held the Spartans scoreless and struck out one over the final two and two-thirds innings.

"I really liked how Paige came in and closed her inning out, and same with Roni over the final three innings. And with Jess swinging the bat, you can't ask for more than that," said Boise State head coach Cindy Ball.

The teams return to Mission College Friday, playing the second game of the series at 1 p.m. MT.

"I'd like to see us make quicker adjustments. We hit the ball in the air today and that didn't help us out with the wind," Ball said. "We just need to keep playing one pitch at a time, playing together and for each other."

Boise State (24-13, 6-7 MW) put two runners on base in both the first and the third innings but couldn't bring a run across. In the third, the Broncos got runners on the corners with two away but were thwarted when Makenze Sullivan's line drive, appearing to have enough to clear Watt's head in right, was instead snagged by the leaping rightfielder.

The Broncos broke through thanks to Spartan errors in the fourth. Cassidy Edwards opened the frame by reaching on an error at short by Georgia Blair, followed by a walk to Tatiana Sorokina. After Edwards was forced out at third on Corey Hendrickson's grounder to short, pinch-hitter Jessica McKay walked to load the bases.

Shaelee Pearson grounded back to Katelyn Linford in the circle, with Sorokina forced out at the plate, but Kora Wade picked Pearson up with a base hit up the middle to score Hendrickson and get the Broncos on the board. The Broncos cut it to 5-2 a batter later as Blair made her second error of the inning by dropping a line drive from Izzy Serrano.

San Jose State (25-14, 5-5 MW) got a run back in its half of the fourth when Abacherli led off the frame with a triple and scored on Clark's fielder's choice.

Boise State put two on in each of the final two innings but could not add any more runs to its tally.

For the Broncos, Wade and Edwards each went 2-for-4, while McKay was 1-for-2 with a run scored off the bench. Clark led the Spartans with two hits and three RBIs, while Abacherli had two hits and scored twice, and Chelsea Jenner went 2-for-3.

Linford improved to 16-6 with the win, going the distance and allowing two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
