Final Stats

FRESNO, Calif. - Boise State mustered just three hits and committed four errors in a 5-0 loss at Fresno State Friday, to open a three-game Mountain West series. Kenzie Cole pitched four innings of shutout relief to keep the Broncos close.

Holly Bourke and Devon Bridges each collected hits in the first inning to put runners on second and third with one out. It was the only time the Broncos would threaten against Bulldog freshman pitcher Jill Compton. Bourke's infield single was her 173rd career hit, tying the all-time Boise State record. Bridges doubled to the wall in left center but it was not enough to drive in the run.

Rebecca Patton earned the start for Boise State and was put in a tough spot from the very beginning. A leadoff bunt single in the first inning was coupled with a throwing error to put a runner at third with nobody out. Patton picked up two big strikeouts and a fly out to escape without allowing the runner to score.

In the second inning Fresno State started with back-to-back doubles to take the lead. An error allowed another runner to reach and two outs later a single to right scored a second run. Bourke threw out a runner trying to go first to third on the play to end the inning, but the lead runner had already crossed the plate.

Things came unraveled in the bottom of the third inning. A single, two errors a wild pitch and an unsuccessful fielder's choice accounted for three more runs and ended Patton's day before she could get an out in the inning. Cole was called upon and induced a double play from the first batter she saw.

Patton allowed five runs but just one was earned in her two-plus innings of work. She surrendered five hits and no walks while striking out two. She falls to 9-8 on the season.

Cole got out of the third inning and went on to toss a perfect fourth. The sophomore gave up a one-out hit in the fifth before getting the Broncos back to the dugout with the score still 5-0. In the sixth a hit batter was the only Bulldog to reach as Cole continued her strong relief stint. She struck out one and did not walk anybody in her four innings.

In her last 14 and two-thirds innings (all coming out of the bullpen), Cole has allowed just two runs and walked only four batters.

Compton worked around a third-inning error, a two-out single in the fifth and a two-out walk in the sixth to toss her third shutout of the season.

It is the first time Boise State has been shutout in a regular-season conference game since April 2, 2010, also at Fresno State.

The series continues Saturday, at 6 p.m. (PT) from Bulldog Diamond.
