FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State hit grand slams in each of the first two innings of Friday's series opener and cruised to a 9-0, five-inning victory over Boise State at Margie Wright Diamond.

Savannah McHellon put the Bulldogs (21-10, 3-1 MW) up 4-0 with her first-inning grand slam, while Vanessa Hernandez added hers with two out in the second, making it 9-0.

"Putting tonight behind us and focusing on the next two games and a chance to win this series is exactly what we talked about postgame," said Boise State head coach Cindy Ball. "Even with our pitchers not performing at their best today, we could've done more at the plate to get us back in the game. As a whole we need to compete better and that's what we're looking for, being tough outs and getting ahead of batters."

Boise State (20-8, 2-2 MW) couldn't muster any runs against Bulldog starter Kamalani Dung, who struck out seven Broncos while allowing just three hits. The Broncos got a two-out triple from Cassidy Edwards in the second, and put runners on second and third with two out in the third but could not crack the scoreboard either time.

Dung improved to 14-6 with the win. For the Broncos, starter Christina Washington fell to 11-4, getting just one out over the first six batters in the first before being lifted for Veronica Lynch. Lynch went just an inning and a third, giving up four runs on three hits and five walks. Free passes were a problem for the Bronco pitchers, as Washington and Lynch combined to walk eight Fresno State batters over the first two innings, and reliever Jenna Bassler added another in the fourth.

Fresno State loaded the bases with one out in the first after a single from Miranda Rohleder, a walk to Kindra Hackbarth and a one-out walk to Lindsey Willmon. McHellon then sent a 2-2 offering from Washington out to left for her fifth homer of the season, and, after a walk to Kierra Willis, Lynch came into the circle for the Broncos. The Bulldogs got a fifth run in the frame on a bases-loaded fielder's choice from Katie Castellon after Lynch walked the first two batters she faced.

The Bulldogs did all of their damage in the second with two away. Walks to Willmon and Willis sandwiched a double from McHellon, followed by Hernandez homering to left to make it 9-0.

Game two in the series is set for a 7 p.m. MT first pitch Saturday.
