LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Teauna Hughes brought the power to Boise State’s finale at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock, hitting a pair of home runs as the Broncos beat Texas Tech, 8-4.

It was the second two-homer game of Hughes’ career, with the first coming last March 7 against Montana. Sunday, she went 2-for-3 with her second long ball of the game, a two-run shot in the third inning, tying the game at 4-4.

Makenzie Sullivan hit her second homer of the season two innings later, a two-out job in an inning kept alive after Corey Hendrickson reached base on a Red Raider error. The Broncos added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth, as Kayla Clausen doubled to lead off the frame and came home on Rebekah Cervantes’ one-out single, and Cervantes came around on Izzy Serrano’s RBI single two batter later.

Cervantes and Serrano each had two hits, with Serrano driving in a pair of runs. Her first RBI came on a sacrifice fly in the first after Kora Wade’s leadoff triple. Hughes added a second run in the opening frame with a solo homer to left.

That two-run first helped Boise State (8-20) overcome a 3-0 deficit (due to the tournament format, the Broncos were the designated home team despite playing at Texas Tech). The Red Raiders took a 3-0 lead on a two-run double by Brittany Warnecke, with Warnecke scoring on a throwing error by Sullivan on a relay home trying to get Jessica Hartwell at the plate. An inning later, they got a run back to go up 4-2 on an RBI triple from Ashley Fultz.

But that was all the Red Raiders got against Bronco starter Mackenzie McGill, who stranded five Texas Tech runners over the next five innings and got help from catcher Kaitlyn Shreves who threw out two Red Raiders trying to steal and picked off another at third. With the win, McGill improved to 3-2 on the year.
