Late Comebacks Doom Broncos In Sweep
March 19, 2016
LUBBOCK, Texas -- It was a heart-breaking Saturday for Boise State in Lubbock as late-inning comebacks by Georgia Southern and Texas Tech doomed the Broncos to losses of 12-9 and 6-5, respectively.
After tying the game in the top of the seventh against Georgia Southern in the opener, the Broncos were done in by a walk-off three-run homer by the Eagles' Alesha Mann. In the nightcap against the host Red Raiders, Boise State let a 5-1 lead slip away as Texas Tech scored three times in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the one-run victory.
Boise State (7-20) closes action at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic Sunday at 9 a.m. MT against Texas Tech.
Georgia Southern 12, Boise State 9: Georgia Southern's Alesha Mann capped a wild, back-and-forth contest with a walk-off three-run homer to center to beat Boise State, 12-9.
The home run jarred the Broncos, who had fought back to tie the game with Laina Holmgren's bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh.
The Eagles needed just three batters to finish it in the seventh, as Macy Weeks led off the frame with a walk and A.J. Hamilton was hit by a pitch by Nicole Wilson to set the table for Mann.
Wilson fell to 2-5 with the loss in relief, giving up seven runs on six hits over the final four innings. Bronco starter Jenna Bassler lasted just an inning, walking two and giving up three runs, while Shawna Burke gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits in an inning and a third of work.
The Broncos pounded out 11 hits in the contest, led by Corey Hendrickson going 3-for-4 with a double and RBI and two hits apiece from Teauna Hughes and Shaelee Pearson. Rebekah Cervantes went 1-for-2 with her third homer of the season and three RBI.
Cervantes' homer came in the second, putting the Broncos up a pair before the Eagles answered with five in their half of the frame. Bassler hit Morgan Robinson to open the inning then walked Hannah Farrell and Weeks to load the bases. The Bronco hurler got the next two outs, but Mann's groundout off of Bassler and to Pearson at second scored Robinson. Bassler looked like she may get out of the jam but India Davis singled through the left side to score Farrell, and Weeks and Davis scored on a throwing error by catcher Morgan Lamb. Lydia Witkowski then walked, stole second and came home on Taylor Rogers' single to left.
Kora Wade and Hendrickson opened the third with back-to-back doubles to cut the deficit to 5-3, and three batters later Makenzie Sullivan reached on an error at first that plated Hendrickson. The Broncos took advantage of the error as Kayla Clausen's RBI single two batters later scored Lamb with the tying run.
Hughes hit a two-run double in the fourth to put the Broncos in front 7-5 but the lead was short-lived as the Eagles answered with three in the bottom half. Davis and Witkowski singled to open the inning against Wilson and were bunted up a bag by Rogers. Emily Snider's sacrifice fly to right scored Davis, followed by a two-run homer from Robinson that made it 8-7 Eagles.
The home runs by Robinson and Mann were the only hits of the day for the pair, while Mann drove in four Eagle runs. Davis went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Boise State tied it at 8-8 on a Cervantes sacrifice fly that scored Sullivan in the fifth, and after the Eagles got back in front with a run in the sixth, the Broncos tied it again, 9-9, on Laina Holmgren's pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk.
Dixie Raley got the win for the Eagles, giving up just a run on four hits over the final three innings. Eagle starter Kierra Camp went three innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits while Heather Felt went an inning in between, giving up two runs on one hit.
Texas Tech 6, Boise State 5: Boise State took a 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth but Texas Tech scored twice in its half of the frame, and thrice more in the sixth to come back for a 6-5 win.
The Red Raiders were helped by a couple of errors in the fifth, the first a throwing error by Rebekah Cervantes at short on an infield hit by Kiani Ramsey and the second on a throwing error by Bronco starter Paige Reimann that extended the inning and allowed Ramsey to score.
In the sixth, two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out for Texas Tech, and pinch-hitter Karli Hamilton doubled in pinch-runner Camaury Washington to make it 5-4. Ramsey then hit a ball that went off Reimann and far enough away from another Bronco infielder to score pinch-runner Kaylee Strickland and Hamilton for the lead.
Ramsey was the only Red Raider with multiple hits in the contest, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Reimann went all six innings for the Broncos, falling to 0-3 after giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits and five walks. The Bronco starter also struck out five batters.
Shaelee Pearson led the Broncos with a 2-for-3 effort that included a triple and two runs scored. Her triple led off the third and she came in on a one-out single from Kora Wade to put the Broncos in front, 1-0.
Texas Tech answered with a run in their half of the third to make it 1-1, and the Broncos looked to have broken things open with a four-run fifth. Kayla Clausen opened the frame with a solo shot to right, followed by a single from Pearson and a walk to Rebekah Cervantes. Wade bounced back to Red Raider starter Mattison Maisel, whose throw to third was off-target, allowing Pearson to score, Cervantes to take third and Wade second. Izzy Serrano then made it a four-run game with a two-run single to center off of reliever Dominique Alcocer.
Serrano's hit was the only one the Broncos would get off of Alcocer, and they only managed two more baserunners, both reaching via error. Alcocer tossed a scoreless final three innings to improve to 6-6.
