Softball Splits Doubleheader to UCR

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Boise State softball team split their two games of a doubleheader against UC Riverside, Thursday at Amy S. Harrison Field. The split moves Boise State to (10-8) on the season.

The UCR Classic will continue Saturday with games against North Dakota State and Colgate.

The Broncos struck early, a rode the momentum to a season-high 18 runs in a six inning victory. The 18 runs is the second-highest single game total in program history. The win also gave Boise State four-straight run-rule victories, the longest streak in program history.

Boise State scored six runs in the top of the first inning, including three off a home run from Makenzie Sullivan – the 24th of her career. Sullivan would end the game going 2-for-4 at the plate, with two runs and four RBIs.

Gianna Mancha earned her fifth win of the season, despite only pitching 3.2 innings. The freshman struck out five batters, but sacrificed two home runs on the day.

The Broncos added four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, and held the Highlanders to only one in the bottom of the sixth to end the game with a 10-run lead.

While the opening game was a slugging fest with both teams recording double-digit hits, the second game totaled only ten hits, as the Broncos fell to UC Riverside (16-7), 3-0.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when the Highlanders were able to put three runs on the board to take the lead.

Boise State had a chance to score with runners on first and second in the top of the fifth, but Kora Wade would foul out to the catcher for the third and final out.

The Broncos would threaten again in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with one out on a single from Shaelee Pearson. Madison Anthony and Morgan Lamb would fly out during their two at-bats to end the inning, and ultimately the game.
