Weekend Closes With Loss To Weber State
March 8, 2015
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State thrice fought back from deficits Sunday against Weber State, but the ninth inning got away from the Broncos in a 19-10, nine-inning loss at Dona Larsen Park.
Boise State fell to 8-16 overall and went 1-3 at the SpringHill Suites Invitational this weekend. The Broncos return to action next Friday at the Easton Tournament in Fullerton, Calif. Boise State opens the tournament Friday morning at 11 a.m. MT against Nebraska before playing host Cal State Fullerton at 8:30 p.m. MT.
Sunday, Weber State (12-8) scored 11 times in the top of the ninth, benefitting from three Bronco errors. The Broncos nearly caught a crucial break with the bases loaded and Rudi Barrios up for the Wildcats. Barrios swung at a 3-2 pitch, with the ball initially appearing to go off the knob of the handle and a few feet up the first-base line. Bronco catcher Hailey Torrez fielded the ball, touched home for the force and fired to first for what seemed to be the second out of the double play.
Confusion settled on the diamond, and a conference between the umpires concluded that the pitch had struck Barrios' hand on the swing, resulting in a strikeout. With bases loaded and just one out and a new life, Weber State scored six straight runs before making another out, beginning with Alyson Kulp's two-run double to left. A walk, a single, then a fielder's choice that included a throwing error by Devon Bridges resulted in four more runs, and another error by Bridges on the next at-bat allowed Sara Hingsberger to score from third to make it 15-9.
After a sacrifice fly from Krystin Kubo, a Malia Corta double and a walk to McKinley Brinkhoff, Barrios came up for the second time in the frame and delivered a grand slam to left off of Mackenzie McGill to account for the Wildcats' final runs and a 19-9 advantage.
Boise State got two runs in the ninth on an RBI single from Bridges and a sacrifice fly from Makenzie Sullivan to account for the final score.
McGill took the loss to fall to 3-4 on the year, giving up seven runs (two earned) on three hits with four walks.
It was a disappointing ending to a game in which the Broncos battled back from multiple deficits. The Broncos trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, but posted three runs to draw even. After loading the bases with one out, the Broncos got a two-run single from Sara Ketelsleger, then tied it up on Torrez' flare to right, which plated Sullivan.
Boise State took a 5-3 lead the next inning thanks to a pair of errors by the Wildcats. With runners on the corners, pinch runner Kaelie Doyle got herself caught between first and second, and was able to get to third on a throwing error by Brinkerhoff that also allowed Jordan Kreiger to score from third. Hughes would then lift a sacrifice fly to left that scored Doyle for the two-run lead.
Yet just as quickly as the Broncos took the lead, they gave it right back as Weber State scored four times in the top of the sixth. The Wildcats loaded the bases with one out then got an RBI single from Mylee Brown to force Bronco starter Nicole Wilson out. With Rachel Rodriguez in the circle, the Wildcats tied it up on an RBI single by Hingsberger then took the lead on Aubrey Whitmer's two-run base hit. Rodriguez, though, would strike out Kubo and get Corta to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
The Broncos would answer with a two-out rally in their half of the frame. With two on, Kreiger went opposite field with a double to right-center, scoring pinch runner Ashley Panetta and Izzy Serrano to tie it up at 7-7.
The teams traded runs in the eighth as well, with Serrano's two-out single to left plating Ketelsleger to keep the game going.
Kirtlyn Bohling got the win in relief for Weber State, improving to 2-3 by giving up just three runs (one earned) and striking out a pair.
Teauna Hughes went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Broncos. Ketelsleger, Kreiger and Torrez each had two hits for Boise State, as well.
