BOISE, Idaho -

Boise State softball scored once in the sixth and once in the seventh for a dramatic 3-2 win against Indiana Friday, on the first day of the SpringHill Suites Invitational I at Dona Larsen Park. Mackenzie Whyte drove in Tara Glover in the bottom of the seventh inning for the winning run as the Broncos (8-10) won their home opener.

Rebecca Patton limited the Hoosiers to two runs on just three hits in her seventh complete game of the season. Patton (8-5) struck out three and walked just one. She retired the last seven Indiana batters to keep the Broncos close and allow the offense to rally.

Boise State trailed 2-1 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning and Makenna Weir on first. Brittany McCray poked a single into right field and Weir did not stop running. A bad throw from the outfield allowed her to take two bases and score the tying run.

With the game still tied in the bottom of the seventh, the Broncos brought the top of the order to the plate. Glover singled up the middle to get things started. Jordan Kreiger laid down a bunt and with nobody covering first Glover took two bases, beating the throw to third which allowed Kreiger to get to second. Whyte came up next and hit a ground ball to third. Glover, running on contact, beat the throw home and the Broncos celebrated a thrilling 3-2 win.

Indiana (2-16-1) struck first, getting a run in the second inning without the benefit of a hit. The Hoosiers then laid down three-consecutive sacrifices, but the Broncos only recorded an out on one of them and a run scored. Boise State catcher Brittany McCray picked off a runner at third to help limit the damage in the inning.

Devon Bridges led off the bottom of the second with a single up the middle. The Broncos would eventually load the bases, but came up empty.

A leadoff double in the top of the third gave Indiana its first hit of the game and had the Hoosiers in business again. A groundout and a sacrifice fly drove in another run and Indiana led 2-0.

Whyte singled to start the home half of the third. A wild throw after a ground ball by Ashley Palmer allowed Whyte to get to third, putting runners on the corners. Bridges laced another single up the middle to put the Broncos on the board.

After the leadoff double in the top of the third, Patton faced just two over the minimum, keeping the Broncos within striking distance. Only three balls left the infield in the final four innings as two-out base hits in the fourth and the fifth were all Indiana could come up with.

Boise State outhit the Hoosiers 7-3, including a multi-hit day from Bridges who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The SpringHill Suites Invitational I continues Saturday, with four games. The Broncos will play twice (2 p.m. and 4 p.m. MT).
