Broncos Rally for Win Over Montana
March 2, 2018

Box Score

ST. GEORGE, Utah –
The Boise State softball team rallied from a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat Montana (4-12), 9-5 on the opening day of the Red Desert Classic, Friday.

The Broncos (6-6) were able to take the lead on a RBI single from Jessica McKay in the top of the sixth with two outs, and added another three runs in the top of the seventh to give them a sizable lead. Needing three outs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game, Micaela Leal forced fly outs from the first two batters, and then a ground out to preserve the win.

Thanks to a pair of errors in the bottom of the first inning, the Broncos found themselves trailing the Grizzles early in the game, 3-0.

Boise State would rally in the top of the fourth inning, however. After struggling to get much offense, and leaving four runners on base through the first three innings, the Blue and Orange were finally able to reach home when McKay scored from second on an RBI single up the middle by Shaelee Pearson. Pearson was able to advance to second on the throw to home. Ashlyn Adams singled on the next at-bat, giving the Broncos runners on the corners with only one out.

Madison Anthony sent a three-run homer over the right field fence to give Boise State a 4-1 lead. Boise State would add another run in the inning.

The Grizzlies would threaten again in the bottom of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Leal came on in relief for Kelsey Broadus. Leal would allow two runs to tie the game, but would allow only one hit in 2.2 innings of action to record her first career win.

Boise State will continue the Red Desert Classic with games against Utah Valley and Southern Utah, Saturday.
