LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Broncos were unable to come away with a victory on day two of the DeMarini Desert Classic at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park in Las Vegas, losing to Utah 9-1 in the first game and then dropping the second 10-0 to Weber State in five innings. The two losses move Boise State to 0-9 on the year.

Utah 9, Boise State 1
The Broncos’ best opportunity of the day came in the bottom of the first when Cassidy Edwards led off with a walk, Izzy Serrano followed by reaching on an error and then Kayla Clausen laid down a perfectly-placed bunt to load the bases with nobody out. All three runners would be left on base, however, as the next three Broncos were unable to push a run across.

Mackenzie McGill started in the circle for the Broncos and recorded a clean first inning before the Utes exploded in the second for five runs to take the lead. The Utes’ Kay Kay Fronda had a double down the right field line to knock in two, and then Hannah Flippen homered later in the inning to build a 5-0 Utah lead.

Utah tacked on another in the third when Heather Bowen hit a home run to make it a 6-0 game. After the two-inning surge, the broncos were able to dig in defensively as Nicole Wilson entered the game in relief and gave up just one run and two hits over 4.1 innings of action.

The fifth inning also began with promise for the Blue and Orange when Shaelee Pearson opened the bottom half of the inning with a single up the middle. Serrano was able to move her to second, but Pearson was unable to cross the plate after two more outs ended the inning.

McGill reentered the game in the seventh and gave up three more runs to make it 9-0 in favor of the Utes. Boise State eventually got a run on the board when Makenzie Sullivan ripped a triple to right center and scored on a wild pitch two batters later to make it 9-1.

Clausen went 2-for-3 in the opener, and Sullivan, Pearson and Sorokina all tallied one hit a piece.

Weber State 10, Boise State 0 (5)
The Wildcats loaded the bases in the first inning for Krystin Kubo and she blasted a grand slam over the left field wall to give Weber State the 4-0 lead that they would not look back from. Page Reimann started the game on the rubber for the Broncos, and she was replaced with Shawna Burke after Kubo’s bases-clearing home run.

Weber State went on to score three runs in the second inning, two in the third and one more in the fourth. The hot-hitting Wildcats took advantage of a few Bronco errors – three on the game – and were able to end the game in five innings.

Kirtlyn Bohling moved to 4-1 on the season after she tossed a no-hitter and gave up just four walks to give Weber State the victory.

The defending Big Sky Conference Champions and the preseason pick to win the conference this season moved to 6-3 on the year with the victory.

Boise State will continue to search for their first win of the season tomorrow morning when they take on Wichita State at 10 a.m. (MT), followed by Oregon State immediately afterwards at 12:15 p.m. (MT).
