HENDERSON, NEV. – The offensive firepower of Boise State’s lineup was on full display, Friday at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park. The Broncos (4-4) downed UTEP, 8-2 to open the Marucci Desert Classic, but fell to Iowa State, 7-2, in the evening game.


A tight, back and forth matchup was blown wide open once Jessica McKay stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning. With the game tied at 1-1 and the bases loaded with only one out, McKay hit a shot over the right centerfield fence to give the Broncos a 5-1 lead.

Freshman Halle Harger would hit a two RBI double while pinch hitting for Karlee Johnson, sending Bri Ambrose and Justene Molina across the plate, as Boise State would work through their entire lineup and score seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Broncos would never look back, downing UTEP (1-6) 8-2 to improve to 3-0 in all-time series. Boise State would end the game with eight runs off of nine hits, while playing an error-free game.

Freshman Gianna Mancha was phenomenal in the second start of her career. Despite allowing home runs in the fourth and sixth innings, Mancha became the first Boise State pitcher to pitch a complete game this season. Mancha struck out eight for her first career win.

Boise State struggled to reach home for the early stretches of the game, getting runners on third in the first, second and third inning, but was still unable to score. It wasn’t until the top of the fifth when Miner pitcher Julia Wright walked Madison Anthony with the bases load that they were able to tie UTEP at 1-1.

Boise State was able to put up two runs and outhit Iowa State (3-3), but ultimately fell to the Cyclones, 7-2, to close out the first day at the Marucci Desert Classic.

Cervantes was able to score on an RBI single from Jessica McKay to the left field line in the top of the first to take the 1-0 lead, while Molina would score on a bunt from Shaelee Pearson in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 2-2.

Cyclone pitcher Emma Hylen pitched a complete game, as Boise State struggled to score runs in the late innings.

The Broncos will be back in action with games against Buffalo and Long Beach State, Saturday.
