Jessica McKay hit a solo home run to centerfield in the bottom of the second inning, but the Boise State softball team ultimately fell to Stanford (2-4) in five innings, 9-1, Sunday at the Tempe Sports Complex.

The loss dropped the Broncos to 3-3 at the Kajikawa Classic, their best record for an opening season tournament since opening the 2015 season 3-3 at the North Texas Tournament.

The Cardinal broke open a 3-0 lead in the top of the first off a two run home run from Whitney Burks, and never looked back.

McKay was able to narrow the gap to 3-1 when she sent her shot over the centerfield fence with one out for the first home run of her career.

Kelsey Broadus made her third start of the season, pitching three innings before being relieved by Micaela Leal in the top of the fourth.

Freshman Justene Molina hit a triple in the bottom of the third with two outs, putting the Broncos in their best scoring position of the game.

Boise State will next head to the Marucci Desert Classic, Feb. 16-18, in Las Vegas. The team will face UTEP, Iowa State, Buffalo, Long Beach State and Hawai’i in the tournament.
