Broncos and Aztecs to Meet in Championship Match

The No. 3-seeded Boise State Broncos (13-6-3, 7-3-1) will face the No. 1-seeded San Diego State Aztecs (12-6-2, 9-1-0) in the championship match of the Mountain West Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. in Albuquerque, N.M at the UNM Soccer Complex.

Boise State defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs, 2-1 to earn a spot in the championship match. Redshirt freshman KT Clayton scored the game-winning goal in the 109th minute to send the Broncos to Saturday’s final.

San Diego State defeated the No. 5 seed Utah State, 3-2 to send the Aztecs to their second-consecutive MW Tournament championship match. The Aztecs came from behind twice in the contest to defeat the Aggies.

Last Time Out

The Broncos fell 1-0 against the Aztecs at home on Oct. 25 at home. San Diego State’s Sophie Metz scored the only goal of the game in the 81st minute.

All Time Record

Boise State is 1-2-0 all time against San Diego State. The two teams have never met in the conference tournament.

On the Aztecs

San Diego State secured the Mountain West regular season title with a 9-1 conference record. SDSU is in its second consecutive MW championship game and fifth overall and have won the tournament title twice.

Postseason Accolades

College Sports Madness has named Boise State’s Kayla Tucker as the Freshman of the Year for its postseason honors. Broncos Kayla Tucker, Brooke Heidemann and Mikhaila Bowden all earned Mountain West first-team honors and Katy Oehring was tapped for second-team honors.                                                                         

Built Tough

Redshirt junior keeper Maddy McDevitt recorded her first clean sheet in the match against Wyoming since the Oct. 20 match against Colorado State. The Edmonds, Wash., native has eight shutouts and one combined, a Boise State single-season record. McDevitt boasts a 0.77 goals-against average through 22 matches.

Score Early and Often

Boise State is 6-0-0 when leading at the half and 5-3-3 when tied at the half. The Orange and blue is 3-1-3 in overtime matches. The Broncos have played in eight overtime matches in 2013 after Thursday’s double-overtime thriller against Fresno State.

Sharing the Wealth

Four different Broncos have scored in the MW tournament. Katy Oehring, Brooke Heidemann, Kayla Tucker and KT Clayton have each scored for Boise State. The Broncos are averaging 1.5 goals per game this season compared to their opponents’ 0.82.

On to the Next One

With the win against Fresno State, the Broncos have tallied their best record (13-6-3) since 2009 when they finished 13-7-4. That year Boise State fell in the first round of the NCAA tournament to UCLA.
