Broncos close season with school record for wins at 11-8-2.
RENO, Nevada (11/7/08) Boise State battled Utah State hard in the Western Athletic Conference Soccer Tournament’s semifinal match but fell 1-0 on a late goal in the 78th minute. Boise State’s defense kept them in the match while the Broncos struggled offensively. Bronco keeper Jennifer Burns made seven saves before the Aggies snuck one past her in the 78th minute to secure the victory. Meanwhile the Boise State offense was outshot eight-to-none on shots on goal during the contest.
Boise State had a few scoring chances in the first half but shots by Saxton in the 32nd minute and Hickcox in the 44th were both blocked by defenders before posing a threat to the Aggie goal.
The second half was similar to the first in that the lone Boise State chance to beat the keeper by Randi Baker was blocked by the defense in the 47th minute. In all, the Broncos took eight shots during the 90 minutes but could not place one actually on target.
The loss eliminates Boise State from the tournament and ends their season. Overall the Broncos surpassed the expectations of many setting a school record for wins in a season as they finish 11-8-2 overall. Impressive for a young team dominated by underclassmen, 19 of the 26 players on the roster were either sophomores or freshmen and will return next season as veterans of the Broncos most successful campaign ever.
In addition, both sophomore forward Shannon Saxton and freshman midfielder Brandy Hickcox were named second-team All-WAC.
