Boise State advances to WAC semifinals with 2-1 victory over San Jose State in Reno?

Broncos set school record for wins in a season with 11.

RENO, Nev. (11/6/08) Brandy Hickcox and Andrea Huerta each recorded goals Thursday afternoon to lead Boise State to its first ever victory at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament defeating San Jose State 2-1 in Reno, Nev.  Hickcox put the Broncos on the scoreboard early in the second half when she scored off a Janelle Jin cornerkick in the 53rd minute. After the Spartans had tied the score in the 62nd minute, Boise State’s Huerta secured the win when she headed a Chelsea Robinson cross past the defense into the goal in the 81st minute.

The first half was a defensive battle as the two teams combined for a total of six shots with Boise State placing one on goal.

Emmy Belding had San Jose State’s best opportunity early in the period but her shot hit the crossbar then sailed out of trouble at the 10:19 mark.

Boise State’s Andrea Huerta fired on goal late in the period only to see the Spartan keeper deny her in the 41st minute

The Broncos Brandy Hickcox gave the Broncos the first lead in the 53rd minute when she redirected a corner kick taken by Janelle Jin into the Spartan goal. It was the second goal of the year for the freshman from Boise’s Capital High.

Nearly 10 minutes later, San Jose State drew even with its only shot on goal in the contest in the 62nd minute. Hallsie Pacheco played a through ball between the defense to Emmy Belding who drove, then fired the match-tying goal into the Bronco goal.

That setup Huerta’s match-winner late in the match. Freshman Chelsea Robinson sent a cross into the Spartan box where Huerta put her head to it knocking the ball past the defense in for the decisive score with nine and half minutes to play. It was Huerta’s, a Centennial High grad, sixth goal of the season and her third match-winner.

It is the first ever win for the program at the WAC soccer tournament as Boise State is now 1-4-1 all-time in six trips to the event. Boise State is now 11-7-2 overall setting a new school record for wins in a season. Up next is a date tomorrow afternoon with regular season WAC champion Utah State (12-7-1, 7-0-0 WAC) in Mackay Stadium at 4:00 p.m. (Mountain Time). The Aggies defeated Boise State earlier this season 2-0 in Boise.
