Three Broncos earn All-WAC soccer honors, Saxton named Freshman of the Year?

The Western Athletic Conference announced it’s postseason soccer honors Wednesday night at the pre-tournament banquet in Boise. Boise State’s Shannon Saxton was named the Western Athletic Conference’s Freshman of the Year in addition to being named to the All-WAC First Team. She was joined two teammates on the WAC’s all-conference team. Seniors Brittney Dugger and Erin Wofford were each named to the second team. These are the first all-conference honors for all three Broncos.

Saxton, a native of Beaverton, Ore. (Beaverton), led the Broncos to a 9-6-3 overall mark, a 5-1-1 conference record, and a second-seed in the WAC Tournament.  The freshman led the WAC in all matches in points (39), goals (17) and tied for first in game-winning goals (4). The freshman ranks fifth nationally for goals scored, goals per game, and points per game. Saxton’s scoring ways have already etched her name in the Bronco record books for both goals and points in a season.

Wofford, a senior from Santa Rosa, Calif. played a vital role in Boise State’s success this year. In addition to providing on field leadership from her midfielder position she recorded four goals and five assists for 13 points. Wofford ranks tied for first on the team in assists, while she is second in goals and points.

Dugger, the Richland, Wash. Native was an impact player for the Broncos in a defensive midfield role. Her defensive skills helped stop many potential attacking opportunities by the opposition this season. As one of 11 seniors she provided leadership on and off the field for her teammates. During the year Dugger scored one goal.

Boise State host the Western Athletic Conference Tournament which starts Thursday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. (Mountain) when San Jose State and Utah State kick-off at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex. The Broncos earned a bye into Friday’s semifinals when they will take on the winner of Thursday’s Fresno State- Nevada match at 3:00 p.m.
