Soccer Falls 2-0 to San Jose State in WAC Semifinals...

RUSTON, La. (11/5/2010) - Boise State’s title defense came up short Friday afternoon in Ruston, La., when the Broncos lost 2-0 to No. 1 seed San Jose State in the Western Athletic Conference semifinals. The Spartans scored two first-half goals, the first in the 23rd minute then a second just before the half to seize momentum. Down two to open the second period, Boise State pushed forward trying to cut into the deficit but failed to get many solid scoring opportunities as San Jose State went defensive to hold off any potential rally attempt by the Broncos. The loss ends Boise State’s season at 8-10-3 overall, while the Spartans advance to Sunday’s championship match against Fresno State.

Boise State played well throughout the contest and nearly opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Shannon Saxton attempted to head a Katy Oehring cross towards the upper left corner of San Jose State’s goal only to see Meghan Maiwald deny it for the Spartans.

San Jose State struck moments later in the 22nd minute on some nice one touch passing by Megan Molina and Kayla Santacruz. The duo drove through the Bronco defense with a series of quick passes followed by Santacruz finishing it off with a one-v-one shot against Liz Ruiz in the Boise State goal. The Spartan attacker beat Ruiz from 15 yards out with a low shot to the right post.

Stephanie Righetti extended the San Jose State lead just before the half in the 42nd minute when she deflected a Stephanie Bales cross from the right wing into goal from two yards out. The cross sailed into a group of players where Righetti was able to get her body in the right place at the right time to deflect the ball past Ruiz for a 2-0 Spartan advantage.

Boise State had its share of possession during the opening 45 minutes placing four shots on goal but failed to get one past the Spartan keeper as the Broncos went into halftime down two goals.

The second half went back and forth with the teams pushing the tempo of the match. At times Boise State dominated the ball possession but was unable to take advantage of it as they had several opportunities to score sail high or wide.

In the end, San Jose State took advantage of their opportunities scoring on two of their nine shots on goal. Boise State placed five on target in the game, only one in the second half, but did not beat the defense. Shannon Saxton and Erica Parks led Boise State with two shots on goal followed by Janelle Jin with one.

Boise State finished its final season in the Western Athletic Conference at 8-10-3 overall and 4-2-2 in league.  Shannon Saxton, Cheyenne Jones and Malia Hendrix completed their careers tied for the most victories of any class with 40. Saxton leaves as the owner of numerous Boise State records including the career marks for most goals with 35, assists with 22 and points with 92. All three seniors received 2010 All-WAC postseason honors.
