Boise State soccer wins draw for second place seed into WAC Tournament?

The Boise State soccer team won the draw that decided whom would be seeded second between the Broncos and the Fresno State Bulldogs at this week’s Western Athletic Conference soccer tournament in Boise. After Boise State and Fresno State tied for second place in the standings at 5-1-1, none of the established tiebreaking procedures could break the tie. So the league resulted to placing each teams’ name into a hat during the coaches’ conference call this afternoon. Then the WAC officials in Denver drew out the name of the team that would be given the second seed into the tournament which comes with a bye into the semifinals on Friday.

The WAC Tournament begins this Thursday at Boise State’s Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex. The opening match will pit the number four seed Utah State Aggies (9-10-0, 5-2-0 WAC) against the number five seed San Jose State Spartans (4-14-2, 2-5-0 WAC) at 12:30 p.m. (Mountain). That match will be followed by the Fresno State Bulldogs (11-6-1, 5-1-1 WAC), the number three seed, against the number six seeded Nevada Wolf Pack (6-10-1, 2-5-0 WAC) at approximately 3:00 p.m. depending on the duration of the first match.

The action will continue on Friday with the semifinals. The 12:30 p.m. match will have the regular season champion and number one seed Hawaii Rainbow Wahine (13-4-2, 6-1-0 WAC) taking on the winner of the Utah State-San Jose State match from Thursday, while Boise State (9-6-3, 5-1-1 WAC) will play the winner of the Fresno State-Nevada match at 3:00 p.m. Once again the start time of the second match will depend on when the first match ends. But it will start no earlier than 3:00 p.m.

The tournament will take a day off on Saturday before concluding with the championship match on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Boise State is undefeated at home going 3-0-2 this season at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex. Since the facility opened in 2003 the Broncos have gone 24-10-8 overall (.667).
