Parks and Saxton Lead Boise State Rally and into the WAC Semifinals with 2-1 Overtime Win Over La Tech...
RUSTON, La. (11/4/2010) - Erica Parks and Shannon Saxton combined on two goals as Boise State rallied past Louisiana Tech for a 2-1 overtime victory in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Ruston, La., Thursday afternoon. Both scores were nearly identical with Saxton crossing the ball from the right wing into the box where Parks finished it off. The decisive strike came in the 102nd minute when Parks beat the La Tech keeper for the match winner from 16 yards out. Dating back to last year's tournament in Boise, Parks has now scored a goal in the last four WAC Tournament matches for Boise State including three straight match-winners.

"I am really proud of the team today, the way they fought back after falling behind early," said Steve Lucas. "It is never easy playing the host school in a tournament with their crowd behind them. The players showed their blue-collar mentality and never gave up. I am proud of them for coming back for the win."
There were not a lot of scoring chances for the Broncos in the first half with only Erica Parks placing one on target in the 45 minutes. The Lady Techsters took seven shots placing two on goal with one score.

Louisiana Tech opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when the Lady Techsters' Brittany Harbaugh played a high pass over the Bronco defense to the right side of the box. Taylor Dennis ran onto the ball for a open one-v-one chance with Liz Ruiz in the Boise State goal. Dennis beat the keeper from 10 yards out sending the ball inside the far left post for a 1-0 lead at the 22:44 mark.

Ruiz kept the Broncos in range when the Lady Techsters threatened again in the 40th minute. La Tech drove into the box where the ball was knocked around by numerous players from both teams. Kiva Gresham found it and fired from close range only to see Ruiz react in time to deny the scoring opportunity and keep the deficit to one at the half.

Erica Parks had a chance early in the second period when she broke open inside the La Tech box for a shot from 10 yards out. She beat the keeper Caitlin Updyke but sent the shot wide left.

Boise State drew even in the 66th minute when the Broncos drove the right flank. Lauren Hickok brought the ball down the sideline then played it to Shannon Saxton deep on the right wing. The senior beat her defender to cross the ball into the Lady Techster box where Parks volleyed it past the keeper into the net knotting the score at one all with 25 minutes to play in regulation. It was Parks' fourth goal of the season. .

La Tech had a chance to take the lead back in the 73rd minute when Emily Brennan came open for a one-v-one against Ruiz. However, the Boise State keeper charged out in time to throw off the attacker who sent the ball wide left.

Parks nearly gave the Broncos their first lead in the 76th minute when she went on a one-v-one with Tech's keeper but under pressure sent the shot just to the left of an open net.

With a minute to go in regulation Rachel King took a hard shot from the top of the box that could have given the Lady Techsters the win. But the ball sailed straight to Ruiz who denied the score and forced overtime.

Neither team scored in the first overtime period setting up the Broncos decisive moment in the second. The Broncos drove down the center of the field where the ball was played to the right wing to Saxton. The senior drove around a player then crossed the ball into the center of the box. Parks was waiting for it and sent the game-winner past the keeper with over a minute gone in the second overtime.

Saxton increased her school records for career assists and points to 22 and 92 respectively.
Boise State now advances to tomorrow's semifinals where they will play number one seed San Jose State (11-7-1). The Broncos are now 8-9-3 overall with the victory over Louisiana Tech. This was Boise State's eighth overtime match of the year and fifth in the last six contests.
