Boise State wins regular season finale 2-0 at San Jose State?

San Jose, Calif. (11/4/2007) Boise State’s freshman sensation Shannon Saxton scored a goal in each half to lead the Broncos to a 2-0 victory at San Jose State in a Western Athletic Conference women’s soccer match at Spartan Stadium on Sunday. The win gives Boise State a final WAC record of 5-1-1 which ties them with Fresno State for second place pending the outcome of Sunday evening’s Idaho at Hawaii match. A Hawaii loss would move the Broncos and Bulldogs into first place.

The win improves the Broncos to 9-6-3 overall and ensures Boise State of a winning season, their third in the last four years. It is also their fourth straight non-losing season after finishing last year at .500 (7-7-4).

At this time it is believed that the tie between Boise State and Fresno State for seeding into this week’s WAC Tournament in Boise will be settled by a coin flip Monday afternoon during a conference call. None of the established tie breaking procedures can solve the tie since they both loss to Hawaii on the road and they drew with each other.

Saxton, a first-year collegiate player out of Beaverton, Ore., increased her WAC-leading totals to 17 goals scored and 39 total points with scores at the 29:57 and 60:56 marks. Both were produced in similar fashion, with pinpoint through passes down the center of the field sending Saxton in toward the Spartan goal, and Saxton calmly slotting the ball on the ground and into the back of the net. The first strike was setup by a Cheyenne Jones’ pass while the second score was off a Randi Baker through ball.

Boise State was led by it’s two freshmen as Saxton finished with game highs of five shots and four shots on goal, while Cheyenne Jones collected one assist and was credited with the Broncos’ other two shots on goal. Romswinckel-Guise and Jessica Scott collected three shots apiece to pace the Spartans, who out-shot the Broncos as a team, 14-13. However, shots on goal were tied at six apiece. Boise State sophomore Jennifer Burns was solid in goal for the Broncos as she collected six saves to earn the individual shutout, her fourth of the season.

The Broncos will host this year’s WAC Tournament starting this Thursday. The tournament’s seedings will not be known until tomorrow’s coin flip to decide Boise State’s and Fresno State’s seeds. The top six teams from the league standings advance to the tournament with the number one and two seeds earning first round byes into the semifinals on Friday. The tournament goes Thursday through Sunday with two matches on Thursday and Friday at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. (Mountain) each day. Sunday’s championship match will start at 1:00 p.m.

Boise State is undefeated at home going 3-0-2 this season at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex. Since the facility opened in 2003 the Broncos have gone 24-10-8 overall (.667).
