Senior Randi Baker scored match-winner on "Senior Day" as Broncos tie record for wins in a season.

BOISE, Idaho (11/2/08) Senior Randi Baker could not have closed out her home career better scoring the match-winner in the 88th minute on “Senior Day” to hand Boise State a 2-1 victory over the San Jose State Spartans Sunday afternoon at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex in Boise. After surrendering a goal late in the first period, the Broncos rallied in the second half on goals by Kaylea Perenon in the 58th minute followed by Baker’s decisive strike 30 minutes later. Not only was Baker’s goal big, it gave the team a school record tying 10th victory on the season.

The Spartans struck first in the match scoring a goal late in the first half. San Jose State’s Jessica Ingram launched a long ball down the center of the field. San Jose State’s Emmy Belding raced towards the ball outmuscling a Bronco defender for control, then fired the scoring strike past the charging Bronco keeper Jennifer Burns for the go ahead goal in the 34th minute.

Down one at the break, Boise State picked up its pressure to dominate the second period holding the Spartans without a shot in the final 45 minutes while firing nine of their own at the visitors' goal.

Boise State drew even by scoring its first goal 13 minutes into the half. The scoring play began with a Bronco attack down the right flank. Shannon Saxton drove the ball around her defender on the wing when she passed the ball to an unmarked Kaylea Perenon in the center of the field. The junior from Oakland, Calif., lobbed a high arcing shot from 35 yards out over the head of the Spartan keeper Shanelle Furner and just under the crossbar knotting the score at one all at the 57:29 mark.

The Broncos had several opportunities to take the lead in the final 32 minutes but came up short each time sending shots either just wide or high until recording the decisive goal. The top two chances came late in the match from Baker 23 seconds apart.

The first was a rocket from 17 yards out that deflected off the left post at 87:03 which was later cleared by a defender.

The final was the match-winner when she stole the ball then split two defenders before launching the scoring strike from 22 yards out. The shot sailed through the defense then beat the keeper just inside the left post for the Bronco go ahead goal at the 87:26 mark.

The victory means the Broncos finish the regular season with a 10-7-2 overall record and a 3-3-1 conference mark, good for fourth place in the Western Athletic Conference standings. The school record for wins in a season was tied Sunday afternoon by the young Boise State squad, a roster that is dominated by underclassmen (19-of-26 players). The victory also made the three seniors the winningest class in program history. Next up for Boise State is a rematch with San Jose State (5-10-4, 2-4-1 WAC) next Thursday in the first round of the WAC Tournament at Reno, Nevada.
