Soccer Rallies on Two Late Goals to Draw 2-2 with Fresno State...
Saxton and Lucas score in final seven minutes to earn draw for Broncos.

BOISE, Idaho (10/29/2010) - Shannon Saxton and Kati Lucas each scored in the final seven minutes of regulation to help Boise State earn a 2-2 draw with Fresno State in a Western Athletic Conference women’s soccer match Friday afternoon in Boise. The draw in the Broncos home finale was hard fought and crucial in keeping their regular-season title hopes alive.

The contest was physical throughout with both teams challenging every possession. The Bulldogs opened the scoring late in the first half when Krissy Looney sent a high ball into the box that deflected off the defense and straight to Laura Dodd who volleyed the ball into the back of the net from three yards out. The goal in the 37th minute gave Fresno State a 1-0 halftime lead.

Up one with 12 minutes to play in regulation, Fresno Stat extended its lead when Kayla Kret headed a left corner cross from Bradlee DeShane into goal from five yards out. That made the score 2-0 Bulldogs with 10:25 to play in regulation.

Down two and time running out, Boise State came alive to rally with a pair of quick goals to force overtime. The first came when senior Shannon Saxton, the Broncos career leader in scoring, drove into the Bulldog 18-yard box in the 83rd minute. Saxton flew past one defender freeing herself up for an open shot at goal. She did not waste the chance launching a rocket from the right side that sailed into the for left corner of goal to cut the Boise State deficit to one with less than seven minutes to play. Saxton’s goal increases her school career records for goals to 35 and points 90.

The score in the 83rd minute by Saxton lit a fire into her teammates as they picked up their intensity forcing the action into the Fresno State defensive third. With time running out, the Broncos drove down the right flank in the 89th minute when Lauren Hickok cut towards the center. She played the ball to a streaking Kati Lucas making a run toward the Bulldog box. Lucas, a junior from Richland, Wash., ran onto the ball in stride, drove a few yards then fired a hard-low shot inside the right post from 19 yards out to tie the match at two with 1:15 to play in regulation.

Neither team scored in the final seconds of regulation forcing the contest into overtime. Boise State took two shots in the first extra period placing one on goal, which was denied by the Bulldog’s keeper Kaitlyn Revel. Fresno State was unable to get a shot off in the period.

The second overtime stanza saw Fresno State out shoot Boise State two to one, but none of the attempts were on target. After 110 minutes of action the teams settled on a 2-2 draw.

This was the fourth-consecutive overtime match for Boise State who goes to 7-8-3 overall and 4-1-2 in WAC action, Fresno State who is battling for the final berth into next week’s conference tournament in Ruston, La., is now 6-8-4 on the year and 2-3-2 in league.

Boise State, who has already qualified for the tournament, now travels to California for a 3:30 p.m. (Mountain) encounter Sunday afternoon at San Jose State (10-7-1, WAC 4-2-1) with a potential WAC regular-season title on the line. The scenarios are still numerous but Boise State needs to win Sunday, then hope Fresno State either ties or wins at Idaho to have a chance at the WAC regular-season title.
