BOISE, Idaho (10/29/06) The Boise State soccer team claimed a bid to this week’s WAC Tournament in Reno, Nevada with a 2-1 victory over Louisiana Tech in the regular season finale at the Boas Tennis & Soccer Complex in Boise. The Broncos entered the contest knowing they needed to win or tie the match to guarantee themselves of a WAC Tournament bid. First half goals by Annie Tom and Randi Baker lifted the Broncos to the victory and a berth to the tourney as Boise State closed the regular season at 7-7-3 overall and 2-3-2 in league play.
Boise State started the match out quick with three shots on goal in the first five minutes of the game. Kristin Hall, Jessica Hobdey and Katie Keller all tested the Lady Techsters’ goalkeeper, Jill Medigovich, early but failed to beat the keeper on three solid shots.
The Broncos pushed the action into the Louisiana Tech half for the majority of the opening period. Boise State struck first in the 14th minute when Tom controlled a 50-50 ball. She proceeded to beat her marking defender and the charging goalkeeper to send a low roller inside the left post for a one goal Boise State advantage.
Down one, Louisiana Tech pulled even in the 35th minute on a corner kick. The Lady Techsters’ Amy Wolsted scored the tying goal on a leftside corner kick that she curled into the Bronco goal at the 34:33 mark on the clock knotting the score at one all.
Four minutes later Boise State reclaimed the lead. The scoring play was setup with a penalty kick that senior Nicole Coleman sent off the left post. The ball deflected back into the field where Brennan Lau gained control. She then touched the ball through the defense to sophomore Randi Baker who volleyed it past the keeper from seven yards out into goal giving the Broncos their second one score advantage.
The Broncos out shot Louisiana Tech 6-to-3 in the first period as they took the one goal lead into the intermission. Boise State’s Kim Parker record two saves including one on a high lob by La Tech’s Amy Wolsted that the Bronco goalie stretched high to touch off the crossbar before corralling the ball in front of goal.
The second half was similar to the first in that Boise State continued to push the action towards the Lady Techsters’ defensive half. However, the Bronco defense picked up their pressure in the final stanza and held Louisiana Tech to just three shots, none of which were on goal during the period.
Boise State had several chances to extend their lead in the last half but were denied by La Tech’s keeper or their own touch sending shots wide or high. The Broncos took 14 shots during the period placing five on goal. On the day Boise State held an 11-to-three advantage in shots on goal.
It was senior day for six Broncos as Boise State bid farewell to Nicole Coleman (Boise, Idaho), Kristin Hall (Boise, Idaho), Brennan Lau (Boise, Idaho), Molly McDonald (Maple Valley, Wash.), Kim Parker (Portland, Ore.), and Annie Tom (Mililani, Hawaii).
With the victory Parker extended her school record for career wins in goal to 26. Boise State will now wait to see what seed they will have into the tournament. Hawaii was playing at Fresno State late this afternoon, if Fresno State wins the Broncos are the fifth seed and will face San Jose State on Thursday, if Hawaii wins they will pass Boise State in the standings forcing the Broncos, as the sixth seed, to play tournament host Nevada first.
