MW Regular Season Finale in Logan
Oct. 26, 2017
UP NOW: Boise State (11-5-3, 6-2-2 MW) closes out Mountain West Regular season play tomorrow (Friday) at Utah State (9-6-3, 4-4-2 MW) at the Chuck and Gloria Bell Field in Logan. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
The Broncos are guaranteed to compete in the Mountain West Tournament next weekend in Las Vegas (Oct. 31 – Nov. 4), but their seed is dependent on the result in Logan along with what happens in Albuquerque between New Mexico and San Diego State.
Rk. Team MW Record Points
1. San Jose State 8-1-1 25
With Boise State currently in a tie for third in the conference standings, the Blue and Orange will need to beat Utah State and hope that the Lobos and Aztecs tie in order to grab the No. 2 seed. Any other outcome will give the Broncos the No. 3 or 4 seed, as they hold the tiebreaker against Fresno State, who is currently in fifth.
LAST TIME OUT: Boise State picked up two home wins last weekend at the Boas Soccer Complex with a convincing 3-1 result against Nevada Friday followed by a 6-1 rout over UNLV Sunday. Raimee Sherle was dominant all weekend in scoring five goals and assisting on another for 11 total points. The sophomore's hat trick against the Rebels was the second of her career, while the six Blue and Orange goals was the highest single-game scoring output since Oct. 8, 2010 when the Broncos also scored six goals against New Mexico State. Madi Campbell, Aubree Chatterton and Baylee Blaser also found the back of the net against UNLV, capping off what was a memorable senior day for Boise State's six seniors (Blaser, Campbell, Janelle Flores, Falon Miller, Sarah Taylor and Jessie Vogel).
Friday's 3-1 result was a product of a Sherle brace and a McKenna Kynett goal. Also underclassmen, Chatterton and Kynett also excelled in the team's final two home games in earning four and three points each, respectively. Flores was sensational in net, as well, tallying eight saves and only giving up goals on penalty picks. Boise State could earn a No. 2 seed in the league tournament with a win Friday at Utah State coupled with some help from New Mexico and San Diego State.
ABOUT UTAH STATE: Currently seventh place in the Mountain West, the Aggies have won their last two games with a 2-1 victory against UNLV and a 4-0 result against Nevada. Utah State needs a win Friday and some help to advance to the Mountain West Tournament.
Ashley Cardozo and Bailee Hammond both have eight goals apiece, leading the way for the Aggies. Goalkeeper Sara Cobb possesses a 1.08 GAA (sixth in the MW) and has tallied 78 saves (third in the MW).
HISTORIC WEEKEND FOR SHERLE: The 11 points last weekend not only earned Sherle Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week honors, but it also led her to being named the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer National Player of the Week, as well.
The sophomore is currently first in the nation in game-winning goals (8), third in points (36), tied for third in goals (15) and seventh in points per game (1.89 ppg).
The season totals in points and goals also puts her at No. 2 in the Bronco record book for both statistics.
In addition, her Mountain West point (26) and goal (11) totals are both good for the Mountain West records for a single season. She is within reach of the overall point (42) and goal (18) conference records for an entire season, as well.
OFFENSE KEEPS ROLLING: In the 10 games of Mountain West play, Boise State leads in five of the six major offensive categories: points (62), goals (24), goals per game (2.40 avg.), assists (14) and assists per game (1.40 avg.). They are also No. 2 in shots (183).
The Broncos also rank in the upper echelon of the NCAA in regards to the entire season, as their 90 points are tied for 54th and the 34 goals scored is tied for 37th.
FOUR FORWARDS EXCELLING: While Sherle has undoubtedly led the way with her 15 goals, the Broncos have had three other forwards score at least four goals each so far this season in Blaser (7), Kynett (5) and Chatterton (4). The well-rounded attack has been a big component of the Broncos’ recent success on the offensive end of the field.
Blaser also is now tied for fifth in school history in career goals with 17, while Sherle is fourth with 22.
