RENO, Nevada (10/26/08) - Boise State freshmen Janelle Jin and Chelsea Robinson each recorded goals Sunday afternoon to lead the Broncos to a key 2-0 Western Athletic Conference road victory at Nevada in women’s soccer. Jin scored the match-winning strike in the third minute to give Boise State early momentum, while Robinson clinched it with an insurance goal midway through the second half to hand the Broncos the victory. Sophomore Shannon Saxton dished out both assists versus the Wolf Pack to tie the school record for assists in a season with seven.

In a match that turned out to be a defensive battle for 90 minutes, Boise State managed to convert on two of its five shots on goal to claim a crucial conference victory over the Wolf Pack on the road. It began early for the Broncos who took the lead when freshman Janelle Jin volleyed a Shannon Saxton cross into goal from six yards out with 2:59 gone in the contest for a quick 1-0 Bronco advantage. Jin’s second career goal gave Boise State the early momentum.

Six minutes later Boise State’s freshman goalkeeper Liz Ruiz was forced to make two back-to-back saves to preserve the Bronco advantage. Nevada attacked into the Boise State 18-yard box in the ninth minute where Samantha Miller was able to fire two shots at the Bronco goal. Each time Ruiz came up big denying the Pack’s attacker to keep Boise State up one.

Boise State’s Tara Roetter nearly extended the Broncos’ lead just before the half. Unfortunately, her shot in the 44th minute was stopped by Nevada’s Marie Cove in goal.

The Wolf Pack came out of the halftime break fired up forcing the action into the Boise State defensive third. Nevada out shot the Broncos five to none in the first 15 minutes of the period. Fortunately, Ruiz was up to the task as she denied the three Wolf Pack shots that were on target in the 48th, 59th, and 60th minutes. The Freshman’s play in net was enough to give her team a chance to regroup defensively. The Bronco defenders held Nevada without any other shots on goal in the remaining 30 minutes.

After weathering the storm in the first 15 minutes, Boise State’s Chelsea Robinson gave the Broncos a little breathing room when she scored an insurance goal in the 63rd minute. Boise State countered the Nevada pressure with a counterattack down field.

Robinson had two chances to extend Boise State’s advantage, the first chance came in the 62nd minute but it was denied by Cove in goal.

The second came a minute later in the 63rd when Saxton took the ball down to the Nevada endline where she turned and passed the ball back to Robinson making a run into the box. Robinson collected the ball then launched the scoring strike through the defense into the goal for a commanding 2-0 Boise State lead at the 62:46 mark.

Senior Randi Baker nearly gave the Broncos a three-goal lead in the 68th minute but failed to get her shot past Cove.

The win at Nevada’s Mackay Stadium was big for Boise State in its quest for a fourth-consecutive berth to the WAC tournament being held in Reno, Nev., Nov. 6-9. The Broncos ended the weekend road trip with a split as they improved to 9-6-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play. The regular season ends this coming week when the Broncos host Hawaii on Friday at 4:00 followed by "Senior day" against San Jose State next Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
