Boise State and Fresno State battle to 1-1 draw, Broncos claim sole possession of first place?

BOISE, Idaho (10/26/07) Boise State and Fresno State battled hard through regulation and two overtime periods before settling for a 1-1 draw in Boise Friday afternoon. Down one late in regulation, senior Erin Wofford scored for Boise State in the 80th minute to tie the match and force overtime. The match marked the fourth time in seven meetings between the two schools that the game has gone to overtime periods to be decided.

The Fresno State Bulldogs took the initial lead late in the first half when Nicole Gutierrez scored in the 36th minute. Ali Sill played a hard ball down the center that was partially deflected by a defender. Gutierrez was able to continue her run down the field for a one-v-one with the Broncos’ Jen Burns in goal. As Burns charged out, Gutierrez shot the ball low to beat the Bronco keeper for the go ahead strike with 35:29 gone in the match.

Down one late in the in regulation, the Broncos’ Erin Wofford tied the match in the 80th minute to force overtime.  The play started with a Cheyenne Jones corner kick that sailed to the top of the six-yard box. The ball deflected off a defender out to Boise State’s Nicole Tadman waiting high in the penalty box. The senior immediately sent a shot back towards the Bulldog goal where Erin Wofford managed redirected the shot past the defense and inside the far left post knotting the score at one all. The strike was Wofford’s fourth goal of the season.

Boise State had a chance to win the match in regulation in the 86th minute but came up short. The Broncos’ Kaylea Perenon gain control of the ball about 25 yards out from goal where she found herself unmark by a defender. The sophomore from Oakland, California turned and launched a rocket towards goal only to see the shot deflect off the crossbar followed by a defensive clearance.

Boise State started overtime quick nearly winning with a solid strike in the 92nd minute. This time Boise State attacked down the left flank. Cheyenne Jones ran onto a pass and drove into the 18-yard box. As Jones charged she sent a hard shot low that hit the right post and deflected across the mouth of the goal. Unfortunately, no Bronco managed to touch the deflection into the open net.

Boise State saw a Danielle Schwalbe header saved by Fresno State’s Kaity Revel in the 93rd minute. They also saw a Alli Tuschida strike sail wide left. Fresno State had their chances but watch helpless as attempts by Gutierrez and Sill missed either high or wide of the target.

The Broncos had the best scoring opportunity in the final overtime but good Bulldog defending denied the winning goal. Boise State’s chance came when they setup for a corner kick from the left wing in the 108th minute. Emma Boyack sent the kick to the top of the six-yard box where Randi Baker headed the ball towards goal. The Bulldogs’ keeper denied the shot by fisting it out to the right wing where senior Sophie Parrish was waiting. The Meridian, Idaho product fired the ball back towards goal where her shot was blocked and sent across the end line.

Neither team managed to get another good shot off at target as they settled for the 1-1 draw. On the day, Fresno State outshot the Broncos 11-to-nine, but the Broncos held the edge in shots on goal by a four-to-two margin.         

Boise State’s draw combined with Utah State’s 3-2 victory over Hawaii in Logan, Utah puts the Broncos in sole possession of  first place in the Western Athletic Conference standings at 3-0-1 while improving to 7-5-3 overall.  Fresno State keeps pace with the Broncos going to 8-6-1 on the year and 3-1-1 in league action. Next up for the Broncos is Nevada at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday in Boise. It will be senior day for Boise State’s 11 seniors playing in their final home match.
