It was a rain soaked afternoon in Boise but that did not stop the action as these two rivals battled hard for 90 minutes of regulation before Harris’ decisive strike in the 91st minute gave the win to the Broncos. The victory improves Boise State to 4-1-1 in Western Athletic Conference action and 7-8-2 overall, Idaho fell to 13-5-0 on the year and 4-2-0 in league.

The entire match went back and forth as the two teams pushed the tempo. Both teams had numerous opportunities to win the contest in regulation but fell short on their final touch or were denied by stingy defenses.

In the first half the Broncos out shot the Vandals five to three in shots on goal. Idaho’s Liz Boyden stopped all five of Boise State’s scoring chances by Cheyenne Jones, Shannon Saxton, Katy Oehring, Malia Hendrix and Ebie Harris.  Likewise, Boise State’s Liz Ruiz turned away all of Idaho’s first half opportunities stopping shots from Amber Pimley, Jill Flockhart and Erica Hart.

The second half saw the teams step up their intensity and effort as the match became extremely physical as the teams challenged every possession.  They combined for 14 fouls in the last 45 minutes of regulation as the rivals went at each other. Boise State once again held a five to three advantage in shots on goal during the final period, matching its first half margin.

Saxton, Jones, Erica Parks, Chelsea Robinson and Kati Lucas all placed shots on the Vandal goal but came up short as Boyden denied all of them in the net for Idaho. For Idaho, Chelsea Small, Megan Lopez and Melissa Canite were able to fire on the Bronco goal only see to Ruiz deny all of them for Boise State.

In fact, the best opportunity for the Vandals was denied by Ruiz late in regulation when Small launched a high shot that went over the defense and dipped towards the crossbar. Ruiz was able to get her finger tips on the ball enough to force the shot high over the bar to preserve the scoreless draw with 18 minutes to play.

Boise State dominated the final 10 minutes of the contest forcing the action into the Vandal defensive third. The Broncos had several solid scoring chances from close range off crosses but could not quite connect well enough to get the ball across the goal line as the match went to overtime.

The freshman played a low ball to an open Harris in the center. Harris drove towards the Vandal 18-yard box before pulling up and firing a rocket from 19 yards out that beat Idaho’s Boyden sailing inside the far left post for the game-winning strike 43 seconds into overtime.
