FRESNO, Calif. (10/24/08) Fresno State scored the match-winning goal in the 67th minute to defeat Boise State 1-0 in a Western Athletic Conference soccer match Friday night in Fresno, Calif. The contest was a battle between the second place Bulldogs against the third place Broncos. The match was evenly played with the host out shooting the visitors seven to six in shots on goal. In the end, Fresno State managed to capitalize on one Boise State breakdown to record the only goal needed to claim the key conference victory.
Boise State was led by sophomore Shannon Saxton who placed three shots on goal but failed to beat the Bulldog keeper. Two of the Beaverton, Ore., native’s chances came early in the first half with the last coming in the final two minutes. Each time Fresno State’s goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel denied the potential Bronco scores.
Three other Boise State players had solid scoring opportunities but suffered the same fate as Saxton with Revel stopping all six of the Broncos’ shots on goal. Senior Randi Baker attempted a header midway through the first half, while Kaylea Perenon fired on goal in the 51st minute. Mandy Nader placed the second to last Bronco shot on target in the 78th.
Jennifer Burns played all 90 minutes for Boise State in goal and had a solid outing. The junior from Boise denied six of seven Bulldog shots on goal, including four of five in the final 40 minutes.
The decisive strike by Fresno State came off a cross from Ali Sill in the 67th minute. Alex Jensen ran onto the cross, beat her defender then scored from 15 yards out for the 1-0 Bulldog advantage.
The loss drops the Broncos to 8-6-2 overall and 1-2-1 in WAC play. Meanwhile, Fresno State maintains its hold on second place in the league standings with the victory as they improve to 3-1-1 in conference and 7-8-2 overall. Next up for Boise State is a match at Nevada (2-11-3, 2-2-1 WAC) on Sunday afternoon.
