BOISE, Idaho (10/22/2006) Boise State and Idaho battled for 110 minutes with neither team able to take advantage of their opportunities as they settle for a 1-1 tie in Boise. They say that in rivalry games you can throughout the records, well that held true today as the Vandals scored only their fifth goal of the year in then played solid enough defense to hold off Boise State’s offensive attacks down the stretch.
Boise State took an early lead in the 12th minute when senior Kristin Hall converted a Nicole Coleman through ball into a score. Hall ran onto the ball then sent a 17-yard shot from the right side of Idaho’s box into the far-post for a 1-0 Boise State advantage. That was the fourth goal of the season for Hall and the 13th of her career moving the Boise native to sixth place all-time in career points and fifth (tied) for goals.
The one goal Boise State lead held up to the intermission as neither team was able to beat the opponent’s defense or keeper. Idaho watch shots by Nicole McAllister and Ashley Irish denied by the Broncos’ Kim Parker in goal, while Boise State’s Hall and Brennan Lau saw their strikes at Idaho’s goal stopped by the Vandal’s Anna Sandman in goal.
Down by one to begin the second half, Idaho struck back with a goal in the 57th minute. The Vandals attacked down the right flank where Maria Madeira fired a hard shot from distance that deflected off the near post back onto the field. The ball sailed past the Bronco keeper and a defender straight to the Vandals’ Eija Hodgin where she volleyed the rebound from five yards out into goal knotting the score at one all.
Both teams had chances to claim the lead after that but failed. Boise State had numerous opportunities that just missed target while Katie Keller, Hall, Randi Baker, and Molly McDonald all had shots on goal in the second period but were denied by the Vandal keeper. Idaho had chances as well to get the victory in regulation including a high lob shot from Morgan Bunday that hit the crossbar then was cleared away at the buzzer.
In overtime Boise State had solid opportunities to win but came up short once again. The Broncos found senior Annie Tom wide open as she made a run down the center in the 96th minute beating to defenders only to see Idaho’s Sandman deny the Bronco attacker.
Shortly after Tom’s attempt the Broncos had a second opportunity to win the match when Lau raced onto the ball taking it to the right endline. The senior crossed the ball along the mouth of the Vandals’ goal and past the keeper. Boise State’s Sophie Parrish attempted to redirect the cross into the open goal by diving at the ball only to see the ball just miss to the left of target. Boise State also watch a shot by Brittney Dugger sail just left of goal in the 93rd minute.
In the final overtime period Boise State’s Melanie Bohnet sent a shot wide right. Idaho’s only good chance in extra time came in the 108th minute. The Vandals attacked down the center. They played a high ball from the right into the box where Ashley Irish ran onto the ball and headed it towards goal. The ball beat the keeper and two defenders only to see Boise State’s Alli Tsuchida recover in time to clear the ball off the goal line to preserve the draw.
On the day, Boise State out shot Idaho eight-to-six in shots on goal. Idaho’s Anna Sandman recorded six saves in the match while Boise State’s Kim Parker made four. The Broncos had the advantage in corner kicks by a seven-to-none margin.
The draw moves Boise State to 6-6-3 overall and 1-2-2 in WAC play, while Idaho goes to 0-16-1 overall and 0-4-1 in league. Boise State returns to action this weekend when they close the regular season with two home matches against Utah State at 4:00 p.m. (mountain) on Friday followed by the season finale on Sunday against Louisiana Tech at 1:00 p.m.
