Boise State to Play at Fresno State Friday Night in Final Regular-Season Road Game ...
► What’s Happening - Boise State University heads to Fresno, Calif., to face the Fresno State Bulldogs in the final regular-season road game of the year this Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. (Mountain). The Broncos lone match of the week will be played at Fresno State’s Bulldog Stadium.  The Broncos enter the week with a 7-6-4 overall mark and are in a three-way tie for fifth-place in the WAC standings with a 3-3-0 league record following a road loss at Idaho this past weekend.

Fresno State enters the week in fourth-place at 5-10-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference, they are coming off a road split last weekend losing 1-0 at Utah State before defeating Nevada 3-1. With two weeks remaining in the regular season the heat is on for qualifying to the WAC’s postseason tournament being held in Boise Nov. 5-8 with only the top-six teams out of nine advancing to the event.

► What’s Happened Recently - Boise State is coming off a road loss last weekend at Idaho by the score of 3-1. Boise State broke out on top in the 18th minute when Shannon Saxton scored her sixth goal of the season to break the school record for career points with 73. Unfortunately, the Vandals responded with three unanswered goals to claim their first victory over the Broncos in six years.

Looking at Boise State...

► 2009 Scoring Leaders - Junior Shannon Saxton leads the team in scoring with six goals and two assists for 14 points. Freshman Erica Parks is second in scoring with five goals and two assists for 12 points. Saxton is in a four-way tie for seventh in the WAC for goals scored. Another freshman Maureen Fitzgerald is third in scoring with two goals and a team-high four assists for eight points. Fitzgerald is tied for fifth in the WAC for assists.

► 2009 Team Stats - To date, Boise State has recorded 21 goals and 16 assists. Nine different individuals have scored a goal and 10 have recorded an assist. Boise State averages 1.2 goals per game and has a shots on goal percentage of 42 percent. Defensively, the Broncos have recorded six shutouts on the year and have allowed 15 goals this season for a league second-best 0.83 goals against average.   

► Saxton Sets Another Record and Eyes a Second - In nearly three years Saxton has written her name into the Bronco record book ranking in the top-10 of 46 categories. On Sunday, Oct. 18, she set another school record for career points when she scored the Broncos lone goal at Idaho giving her 73 points to pass Brittany Zoellner’s (1999-03) mark of 72. She is now within one goal of tying Zoellner’s record for career goals at 30, Saxton has 29 entering this weekend. Other career records she holds include most assists with 15, most multi-assist games with three, and tied for first in most multi-goal games with five. 

► The Head Coach - The 2009 season marks Steve Lucas’ 10th as head coach of the Broncos where he currently owns  a 80-85-22 record to date. This is Lucas’ 12th season overall with the program after serving two years as the assistant before his promotion in 2000. Against this week’s competition, Lucas is 2-6-1 versus Fresno State.

► About Fresno State - The Bulldogs were picked to place third in the 2009 league race by the conference’s coaches. They returned six starters and 16 letterwinners from last year’s squad that went 11-9-2 overall and 5-1-1 to place second in the league. Fresno State is in its first year under the direction of head coach Brian Zwaschka.

► In 2009 - The Bulldogs enter the week 5-10-0 overall and 3-2-0 in Western Athletic Conference action, good for fourth-place. They are coming off a road split last weekend losing 1-0 at Utah State before rebounding to defeat Nevada 3-1 on Sunday. Fresno State has two preseason All-WAC honorees in sophomore defender Danielle Solich and junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel. Claudia Cardenas leads the Bulldogs in scoring with four goals  followed by Laura Dodd with two goals and two assists, and Rachel Pickett with two goals.  Fresno State has recorded 10 goals on the year while allowing 20 for a 1.3 goals against average.  

► The Series - Friday’s encounter between the Boise State Broncos and the Fresno State Bulldogs10th meeting all-time with the Bulldogs holding a 6-2-1 advantage. Last year in Fresno, the Bulldogs defeated the Broncos 1-0 on a Alex Jensen goal in the 67th minute of play. Boise State’s last win in the series was six years ago in Boise by the score of 3-0.
