Broncos win Gem State championship with sweep of Idaho and Idaho State.
MOSCOW, Idaho (10/19/08) Chelsea Robinson’s goal in the second minute of play was all Boise State’s soccer team needed to defeat Idaho 1-0 on the road in Moscow Sunday afternoon. The Broncos, who outshot the Vandals nine to six in shots on goal during the match, completed the season sweep of their instate-rivals Idaho and Idaho State to win the Gem State championship for the fifth time in 11 years.
Boise State jumped out to a quick lead in the second minute of play. The score was setup when sophomore Malia Hendrix crossed the ball into the box between two defenders. Robinson ran onto the ball and touched it past the defense in to goal for a 1-0 Bronco advantage at the 1:41 mark. It was Robinson’s second goal of the season.
The Broncos had other opportunities during the opening 45 minutes but came up just short as the Vandal keeper Liz Boyden denied each time. Janelle Jin fired a shot at goal in the 16th minute, followed by a Kaylea Perenon header in the 26th, and a Danielle Schwalbe shot just before the half in the 45th.
Boise State opened the second period with two shots on goal by Shannon Saxton in the 47th and 54th minutes but once again Boyden came up big for the Vandals in goal. Janelle Jin launched one on target in the 69th minute followed by a third from Saxton in the 70th but neither shot crossed the goal line. Saxton had the last Boise State scoring chance in the match when she placed her fourth on goal in the 86th minute only to see it denied once again.
Boise State’s Liz Ruiz was huge in goal for the Broncos refusing to let any Idaho shots past her. In the first period she turned away all three Vandal chances coming in the 13th, 14th, and 26th minutes.
The defense kept Idaho at bay most of the second period holding them to three shots on goal. Two of the three came late in the contest in an effort to tie the match. After stopping an early Vandal opportunity in the 58th minute, Ruiz was forced to make two saves in the final minute of the match to preserve the win for Boise State. It was the third victory of the year for the freshman from Boise’s Capital High who improved to 3-3-1 in goal for the Broncos.
The victory in the lone match of the week for both teams improves Boise State to 8-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in WAC play, while Idaho falls to 1-12-2 on the year and 0-2-1 in league. The Broncos will close the regular season’s road schedule this coming week when they travel to Fresno State on Friday followed by a match on Sunday at Nevada.
